AirPods are currently among the best-selling headphones in the world. This is definitely not a surprising piece of information, as it is simply a perfect product that offers countless functions and gadgets. If you own AirPods 3rd generation, AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, you also know that you can use surround sound. If you activate it, the sound will begin to shape itself based on the position of your head to put you right in the center of the action. Simply put, surround sound makes you feel like you're in a (home) cinema - as good as the sound can be.

How to Enable Surround Sound Customization for AirPods on iPhone

However, the Californian giant is of course constantly trying to improve all its products, technologies and services, including AirPods. In the new iOS 16, we saw the addition of a new feature in the form of customizing surround sound for supported Apple headphones. If you activate this function, you will be able to enjoy surround sound even more, as it will be tailored to you. When setting up, you use the TrueDepth front camera, i.e. using Face ID, to scan both of your ears. Based on the recorded data, the system adjusts the surround sound. If you would like to use this new feature, just proceed as follows:

  • First to your iPhone connect AirPods with surround sound support.
  • Once you've done that, go to the native app Settings.
  • Then, at the top of the screen, under your name, tap on line with AirPods.
  • This will show the headphone settings where you go below to the category Spatial sound.
  • Then, in this category, press the box with the name Customizing surround sound.
  • Then just do it will launch a wizard that you just need to go through to set up the customization.

Thus, it is possible to activate surround sound customization for AirPods on your iPhone in the above way. As already mentioned, this feature is only available on supported Apple headphones, namely AirPods 3rd generation, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. At the same time, due to the fact that the TrueDepth front camera is used, it is necessary to own an iPhone X and later with Face ID to set up the surround sound customization, that is, with the exception of the SE model.
