If some Windows applications really lag behind the Mac, they are certainly applications related to productivity, more precisely the Getting Things Done (GTD) method. There is a lot of talk and writing about GTD, and people who use this method praise the results. A desktop application combined with an iPhone application seems to be an ideal solution, but such a solution is difficult to find on Windows.
Mac users often struggle with which application to use for applying GTD. There are many options, the applications are user-friendly and even look good. But a Windows user is dealing with a different problem. Is there even a GTD app that syncs with the iPhone app?
Remember The Milk
Of the few that would come into consideration, I have to highlight the web application Remember The Milk. RTM has become a popular web task manager and has been around for a relatively long time. During this time, we got to know the qualities of RTM and the developers are constantly improving their service.
Remember The Milk also meets the condition of synchronization with the iPhone. Their iPhone app looks great, works well, and is not at all complicated to use. With RTM on iPhone, you'll always have your tasks with you, and whenever you add tasks in the iPhone app, they'll also appear on the web. The iPhone app is free, but if you want to use it long-term, you will have to pay an annual fee of $25. It's not much, but a quality productivity app can save you a lot more. If you don't need the iPhone application directly, you can use the Remember The Milk web interface for free, which is optimized for the iPhone and is completely free!
Remember The Milk should be an obvious choice for Windows users of Google services, especially Gmail and Google Calendar. Remember The Milk offers Firefox users an extension that will display RTM tasks on the Gmail website in the right bar. You can enable this feature even without the Firefox extension in Google Labs, even for Google Calendar. If you happen to use iGoogle, you can have your to-do list here as well. In short, Remember The Milk offers the ultimate solution for users of Google services.
Nice, but I want to have it available offline
You're looking for a Windows desktop solution, and I'm constantly talking about a web service. Nice, you think, but what's the point if I won't have my to-do list available offline. That's a mistake, here comes Firefox and Google again.
For Firefox, Google offers a program called Google Gears. If you are not familiar with it, thanks to Google Gears, supported web services work even offline. Here again, the RTM developers have done a great job and support Google Gears. Thanks to the combination of Firefox and Google Gears, you can have RTM available even when you don't have an internet connection.
Remember The Milk can be a really good solution for Windows users who want to have their tasks with them all the time. It seems to me to be a must-have solution for Windows users, surfing with Firefox and using Google web services such as Gmail or Calendar. If you like this solution, you don't have to pay right away, Remember The Milk also offers a limited time (15 days) use of the iPhone application for free.
Are there other solutions?
I'm not a Windows user, so I don't have an overview of the latest pieces of quality software, but another solution could be, for example, an application Life balance. Life Balance isn't exactly a GTD method, but it's another interesting productivity (and overall enjoyment of life) app that has both a Windows desktop app and an iPhone app. If you use any other Windows solution, be sure to let readers know in the comments.
And what about that radek hulan? :D
I used RTM for a while and it didn't suit me very well. Compared to that http://www.toodledo.com in my opinion, it offers more advanced functions. True, it does not look so nice, but that is a secondary matter. In addition, it also has the FF extension, it integrates into Google just like RTM, the website is optimized for mobile devices and can be synchronized with most TOP iPhone apps.
Compare multiple tools here http://www.toodledo.com/info/compare.php
For windows, I recommend Pocket Informant. It's great on the iPhone. Compared to the first version, it has improved a lot with updates.
An update with push notifications and many more will come out now (already sent to apple))
(the alarm has so far been handled by SMS via Google, which works perfectly)
It can be synchronized with Google Calendar and Toodledo. And they can be conveniently synchronized with Outlook.
In addition, the authors also promise direct synchronization with Outlook, and I think others are already available (RTM I think). It's definitely an app that will keep getting better and it's definitely worth the money.
Hello,
I also use Pocket Informant in combination with google cal, toodledo and outlook. Probably the best option for Windows users that I have come across. Otherwise, reminder SMS messages from Google are free. The biggest plus of Pocket Informant is the calendar and GTD column in one, without switching applications - that's exactly what I was looking for.
I just want to ask - what are the good software for Mac OS?
Jablickar: thanks :-) lukas: I'll try pocket informant. But the worst thing is that I got used to these things a long time ago :-( but I can't shine, although there is a valuable update coming out now, but it's still not the right thing.
So I studied it http://kb.webis.net/questions/146/How+do+I+sync+to+my+desktop%3F
If I understand correctly. I have to synchronize Outlook with Google Calendar and only then can I use the informant in Pocket, and as a bonus I can discard the built-in cal in the iPhone due to restrictions from Apple. Hmm, like if a Japanese should eat rice with one chopstick. But the positive thing is that by the end of the year they plan to release an application for synchronization with outlook. But it's a solution despite how fragile it is, thank you all for it.
Jablickar: oh, I didn't know that, that's great
jablickar: I tried google sync and for the first time I don't have all the events that I have in outlook in the google calendar. There are simply no events for which I have repetitions for several days in one week "e.g. every Tuesday and Thursday" :-)
The best (and probably the most expensive) is Daylite – an app for mac with the Daylite touch app for iPhone. Very addictive…
Well, today I tried the application from Giigle for syncing between Google Cal and Outlook. But otherwise classically between outluk and the calendar via itunes and it works without any problems.
Do Google sms work with POCKET INFORMANT LITE? somehow I can't find them and try them. I'm starting to like this software.
jablickar: I have it set there, but nothing arrived
jablickar: I already verified my phone once, but I didn't have it in the calendar, so it was resolved. Thanks
POCKET INFORMANT: so I tried the Lite version for a few days and I would like to share with you how I feel about it. As a big plus, I would say that you have parallel Calendar and TODO in one application. I will state, a little contradictory, that it is also great how comprehensive the software settings are at the same time, but that is what actually bothers me. I'll admit, I hardly know anything about it. You set up an event and suddenly badges pop up in three categories. I didn't take the Next action item at all. However, it is a great solution for synchronization between outlook, gcal and ical works well. If you're making a decision, I recommend you wait a while, because the developers have sent version 1.1 to the APPstore for approval, which has a lot of improvements, and most importantly, THINGS TOUCH 1.4 is already being tested, which should finally move the application a little further (PUSH, repeated events) and it's their solution that I'm looking for very curious
Jablickar: I've read Allen and I like his system, I meant how the task is ranked when changing from "NONE" to "NEXT ACTION" for example, I have to try and research it, I'm still confused about it. I mainly wait for the repeated events, I don't like writing the same tasks over and over again. It's 10 EUR and I don't want to invest it unnecessarily when I've already paid THINGS once
The mentioned update for Pocket Informant has just been released - push notifications, landscape mode and a lot more... so I'll let you know when I have some first impressions :-)
