When Apple introduced Portrait mode with the iPhone 7 Plus and its dual camera, it immediately caused a wave of attention. Even after almost two years, portrait mode is still only available on iPhone models with a dual camera, although Google proves with its Pixel that a comparable, if not better, effect can only be created with software. Therefore, the question arises whether even older iPhones would not be able to take portrait photos without having to have a pair of rear cameras. There really is a way, and it's quite simple. Let's show you how.

How to take portrait photos on older iPhones

  • Let's launch the application Instagram
  • upper left corner we click on camera icon
  • Then from bottom menu we select the mode Portrait

Then just follow the instructions on the display. First, it is necessary for Instagram to recognize the face. If everything is fine, the application will automatically recognize the face and you can start taking pictures. Otherwise, a message will appear on the display to, for example, go a little closer. After taking a photo, you can save it to the gallery using the button in the lower left corner.

Instagram has really nailed the Portrait feature. However, it cannot be argued that this is a great and flawless replacement for the portrait mode in the native Camera app. The Portrait feature on Instagram has its limitations and sometimes fails to recognize the face or surroundings. Finally, it is worth adding that the Portrait option on Instagram is only visible to users with iPhones 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 8 and SE.
