Even though Apple mentioned their water resistance when introducing the 3rd generation AirPods, which it also highlights in its Apple Online Store, this is not something exceptional. Although the 2nd generation did not offer water and dust resistance, the higher and older AirPods Pro model did, and that was long before Apple showed us its new product.

Both the AirPods and the MagSafe charging case (not the Pro model) are sweat- and water-resistant to the IPX4 specification according to the IEC 60529 standard, so you shouldn't get splashed in the rain or during a tough workout – or so Apple says. The degree of protection indicates the resistance of electrical equipment against the ingress of foreign bodies and the ingress of liquids, especially water. It is expressed in the so-called IP code, which consists of the characters "IP" followed by two digits: the first digit indicates protection against dangerous contact and against the ingress of foreign objects, the second digit indicates the degree of protection against the ingress of water. The IPX4 specification specifically states that the device is protected against splashing water at all angles at a rate of 10 liters per minute and at a pressure of 80-100 kN/m2 for at least 5 minutes.

However, the company refers to a footnote in the Apple Online Store for water resistance information. In it, it mentions that AirPods (3rd generation) and AirPods Pro are sweat and water resistant for non-water sports. It adds that sweat and water resistance is not permanent and may decrease over time due to normal wear and tear. If the text is misinterpreted, one could get the impression that you can take a shower with AirPods. If in theory you can keep up with the amount of water splashing and you'll be done in 5 minutes, then yes, but then there's just that addition with a gradual decrease in resistance, which is not specified in any way. Apple also states that the durability of AirPods itself cannot be checked and the headphones cannot even be resealed.

Water resistance is not waterproof

Simply put, if you overdo it on the first shower, you don't have to listen to anything on the second. The resistance should be given in the event of an accident, that is, if it really starts to rain during an outdoor run, or if you really sweat while working out in the gym. Logically, you shouldn't expose electronics to water on purpose. However, Apple also mentions this in the case of iPhones. His support website then they literally elaborate on the issue and state that the AirPods are not waterproof, and that they are not intended for use in the shower or for water sports such as swimming.

There are also tips on how to prevent damage to AirPods. So you shouldn't put them under running water, don't use them while swimming, don't submerge them in water, don't put them in the washing machine or dryer, don't wear them in a sauna or steam room, and protect them from drops and shocks. If they then come into contact with liquid, you should wipe them with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and allow them to dry completely before using them again or storing them in the charging case.
