SharePlay was one of the most anticipated features that should have been part of iOS 15. However, Apple released it to the public only with the iOS 15.1 update (it will arrive later in macOS 12 Monterey). With its help, you can share the content of the screen during FaceTime calls with all participants who currently also have iOS 15.1.

And not only that, I would like to add. The feature is also available to third-party app developers, so it's up to them how they can implement it in their titles. When the function is also available on macOS 12 Monterey, its meaning will be multiplied even more.

How to use SharePlay on iPhone and iPad

  • Make sure you've updated your iPhone or iPad to iOS 15.1 or iPadOS 15.1.
  • Start a FaceTime call (the other party must also have iOS 15.1 or iPadOS 15.1 installed).
  • Once connected, you can go to Apple Music or Apple TV+ and play some content - it will automatically be shared with the participants of the call, but they must accept the request.
  • You can also tap the rectangle icon with the person on the far right of the FaceTime call bar to share the entire screen of your device, including third-party apps and content.
  • To quit SharePlay or just quit screen sharing, tap the green or purple time icon in the upper left corner of your iPhone, select the SharePlay icon, and choose Quit SharePlay or Quit Screen Sharing. By ending the call itself, you will of course also end any sharing within SharePlay.

You can see a rectangle icon with a person on the right in the FaceTim launcher. After clicking it, you can start screen sharing. In the gallery below, the penultimate screen shows what the interface looks like for the screen sharer, and the last screen for the screen sharer.

To share music, just launch the Music app and select the one you want to play. You can choose whether you want to share it or play it only for yourself. If you select the first option, at the top of the banner you will see that sharing is in progress, and the time icon will also change to the SharePlay symbol. To stop sharing, just select the icon on the right of the FaceTim interface and confirm the termination.

The other party must first open the offer to join SharePlay and then confirm it. This works the same way with the Apple TV+ app, with the only difference being that you're sharing video instead of music. Applications from third-party developers will be similarly affected. You will always share content within the FaceTim interface.
