We already are they showed, how to reduce the brightness of an iPhone or iPad below the normal minimum limit using a filter Low light and achieve at least some replacement for the missing dark mode. However, this method is not the only one, and inside iOS 10 there is another one, perhaps even more effective.

A feature appears under Accessibility Reduce white point, which reduces the intensity of the bright colors of the display. It works similarly to a filter Low light, but with the difference that the user can achieve a much more pronounced darkening and the brightness as such can be adjusted to the desired level.

Reducing the brightness of the function Reduce white point

First, you need to find this function on your iPhone or iPad. To do this, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Display customization and activate the function Reduce white point.

Subsequently, the box expands with a slider, where you can see the percentage expression of the current color intensity of the display. The native (and also minimum) limit is 25%.

Using the mentioned slider, you can now easily regulate the brightness of the display - the maximum (100%) reduction of the white point will significantly darken the display, even if you otherwise have the brightness of your iPhone or iPad set to maximum. By combining the maximum reduction of the white point and the lowest brightness, you even achieve a practically complete darkening of the screen, where you can't see anything even in the dark.

But the important thing is that once you set the white point to a certain percentage, iOS remembers it and every time you activate the function White point reduction then it stays at that value. So once you set the ideal conditions, the next time you just activate the function.

Setting the White Point Reduction function to three-click the Home button

However, it is rather inefficient to go to the settings every time you need to turn on the function. It is much more convenient to reduce the white point by triple-clicking the Home button, which in Settings > Disclosure > Acronym for accessibility (at the very end of the menu) is set by selecting an option Reduce white point.

Once you do that, you have this specific dark mode replacement set up right in the home button and a quick triple press will always turn it on. If necessary, you can deactivate it in the same way.

What is the difference?

By reducing the white point on iPhones and iPads, you will achieve a very similar effect, like when you activate a filter Low light. However, there is a difference between these two methods. With the white point setting, you can regulate the brightness of the display, while the mentioned filter simply darkens the display and you have no other options.

At the function White point reduction you can set exactly how high the display dimming suits you, and then only activate the function if necessary. Compared to the filter Low light although it is not possible to activate the white point reduction in software, but this may not be such a problem. Once you get used to double-pressing (for multitasking) and triple-pressing the Home button, it's not a problem to have this function attached to the hardware button to work.

Moreover, both elements are still possible – White point reduction and filter Low light – to combine, but that makes no sense, because you don't need a brightness so low that you can't see the display at all.
