The name of Apple computers Macintosh, today more often abbreviated Mac, has become world-famous since the 80s. How the name came about is a relatively well-known fact, but few people know what story and interesting things are hidden behind it.

Disputes over the name

At the beginning, the question was directed at Jef Raskin, then the head of a new project at Apple, what was his favorite variety of apple. The answer was a species called McIntosh, and that was the original name of the new computer. A lesser-known fact is that in the early 80s another company had a similar name - McIntosh Laboratory, a company engaged in the production and sale of audio equipment, which by the way still exists under the same name. Due to the impending disputes, Apple quickly changed the name to Macintosh. However, disputes threatened to continue, which is why Jobs later decided to buy the rights to use the Macintosh name from McIntosh Laboratory. And it cheated.

MAC backup plan

The name Macintosh was quickly experienced in the apple company, so it was also calculated in the event that the manufacturer of audio equipment did not agree to the agreement. The backup plan was to use the MAC name as an abbreviation of "Mouse-Activated Computer". Many joked with the name "Meaningless Acronym Computer", loosely translated as "Computer with a meaningless acronym".

Kind of McIntosh

The McIntosh variety is not only important from the point of view of modern technologies, it is also Canada's national apple. In the 20th century, it was the most widely grown apple variety in eastern Canada and New England. The variety is named after John McIntosh, a Canadian farmer who bred it on his farm in Ontario in 1811. Apples quickly became popular, however, after 1900, with the arrival of the Gala variety, they began to lose popularity.

What does a McIntosh apple taste like?

A while ago the web came zive.cz with an article about this apple variety not doing as well as the familiar PCs because of its lackluster flavor. In contrast, the web sadarstvi.cz he says that the fruits of the McIntosh species are "strongly fragrant" and their taste is "sweet, coiled, strongly aromatic, excellent". It's hard to judge without tasting... Even so, this variety has a certain, at least symbolic, meaning for all fans of the apple company.
