You may have read some of the articles where kids were able to spend thousands of dollars on in-app purchases like Smurf Village on a borrowed iPhone or iPad. For a long time now, iOS owners have been clamoring for user profiles where they could limit access to certain features and apps for their children. Google introduced user accounts in the latest version of Android, but iOS users have relatively rich options to limit the use of their device when they lend it to someone. They can thus prevent, for example, In-App Purchases or the deletion of applications.

  • Open it Settings > General > Restrictions.
  • You will be prompted to enter a four-digit code. Remember the code well when entering it (it is entered twice due to a possible typo), otherwise you will no longer be able to turn off the restrictions.
  • Click the button Turn on restrictions. You now have a large number of options to limit the use of your iOS device:

Apps and purchases

    • To prevent children from making app purchases or in-app purchases, turn off the option Installing applications in the Allow section and In-app purchases in the section Allowed content. If your kids don't know the account password, but you want to prevent them from taking advantage of the 15-minute window where they don't have to re-enter the password after they last entered it, change the Require password na Immediately.
    • In the same way, you can turn off the options for purchases in the iTunes Store and iBookstore. If you disable them, the app icons will disappear and only appear after re-enabling.
    • Children also like to accidentally delete apps, which can cause you to lose valuable content in them. Therefore, uncheck the option Deleting applications.[/one_half]

Explicit content

Some apps may allow access to explicit content that your children should not see, hear or read:

  • Adult content is easy to access in Safari, so you can hide the app in a section Allow. iOS 7 now allows you to restrict specific web content - it is possible to restrict adult content or allow access only to specific domains.
  • Explicit content in movies, books and apps can be restricted in the section Allowed content. For movies and applications, you can choose one of the levels expressing the appropriateness of the content for the given age.

Other

  • Children can easily accidentally delete some of your accounts or change their settings. You can prevent this by switching Accounts > Disable Changes in the section Allow changes.
  • In the Restrictions settings, you will find additional options to prevent children from accessing specific features and content.

Before lending your iOS device to children, remember to turn on restrictions. The system will remember your settings, turning it on is just a matter of clicking a button Enable restrictions and entering a four-digit pin. In this way, you will protect the device from your children in terms of software, we recommend purchasing a sturdy cover or case against physical damage.
