Undoubtedly, the world's most widely used office package is Microsoft Office, which also includes the word processor known as Word. Although the giant Microsoft has absolute dominance in this field, there are still a number of interesting alternatives, but only a few of them are worth talking about. In this regard, we are primarily referring to the free LibreOffice and Apple's iWork package. But let's now compare how often news actually comes to Word and Pages, and why the solution from Microsoft is always more popular, regardless of the given functions.

Pages: A sufficient solution with flies

As we mentioned above, Apple offers its own office suite known as iWork. It includes three applications: the word processor Pages, the spreadsheet program Numbers and Keynote for creating presentations. Of course, all these apps are fully optimized for apple products and apple users can enjoy them completely free of charge, unlike MS Office, which is paid for. But in this article, we will only focus on Pages. In fact, it is a great word processor with a lot of options and a clearer environment, with which the vast majority of users can clearly get by. Although the whole world prefers the aforementioned Word, there is still no problem with Pages, as it simply understands DOCX files and can export individual documents in this format.

But as we already mentioned in the beginning, the MS Office package is considered the best in its field all over the world. It is therefore not surprising that people simply got used to it, and that is why they still prefer it today. For example, I personally really like the environment offered by Pages, but I can't fully work with this program because I'm simply used to Word. In addition, since this is the most used solution, it doesn't even make sense to relearn the Apple application if I don't even need it in the end. I strongly believe that most macOS users of Microsoft Word feel the same way about this topic.

Who comes up with news more often

But let's move on to the main thing, namely how often Apple and Microsoft bring news to their word processors. While Apple improves its Pages application practically every year, or rather with the arrival of a new operating system and subsequently through additional updates, Microsoft takes a different path. If we ignore random updates that only correct errors, users can enjoy new functions roughly every two to three years - with each release of a new version of the entire MS Office suite.

You may remember when Microsoft released the current Microsoft Office 2021 package. It brought a slight design change to Word, the possibility of collaboration on individual documents, the possibility of automatic saving (to OneDrive storage), a better dark mode and many other novelties. At this moment, practically the whole world was rejoicing over the one change mentioned - the possibility of cooperation - which everyone was excited about. But the interesting thing is that in 11.2, Apple came up with a similar gadget, specifically in Pages 2021 for macOS. Despite this, it didn't receive such an ovation as Microsoft, and people tended to overlook the news.

Although Apple brings news more often, how is it possible that Microsoft reaps more success in this direction? The whole thing is extremely simple and here we go back to the very beginning. In short, Microsoft Office is the most used office package in the world, which is why it is logical that its users will impatiently wait for any news. On the other hand, here we have iWork, which serves a small percentage of apple users - moreover (mostly) only for basic activities. In that case, it is clear that the new features will not be such a success.
