Quite a lot is expected from the upcoming MacBooks, which we should expect already on October 18. Except for the mini-LED display, two sizes of its diagonals, an HDMI port, a slot for memory cards and of course the implementation of the M1X chip, it may be possible to say goodbye to the Touch Bar. However, Touch ID will remain, but will undergo a certain redesign.

Some hate the Touch Bar and others love it. Unfortunately, others do not talk much about this function of MacBook Pros, so the prevailing impression is that it is useless, which also worsens the user experience. Whether you belong to the first or the second group, and whether Apple keeps it or instead returns classic function keys throughout the portfolio, it is certain that Touch ID will remain.

This sensor for capturing fingerprints has been present in MacBook Pro since 2016. However, it is now also included in e.g. the MacBook Air or the keyboard for the higher configuration of the 24" iMac. The advantage of such authentication is obvious – you do not need to enter a password, multiple users can log in more conveniently on one computer based on the fingerprint, and the function is also linked to Apple Pay as part of payments. According to different information leaks will Apple want to put more emphasis on this key. This is also why the new MacBooks Pro should be illuminated using LEDs. This solution has several advantages, regardless of whether the Touch Bar remains or not.

Possible Touch ID functions

First of all, it will be a clear warning about when the button needs to be used. When you open the lid of the device, it may pulse to make it clear that it is the device that you are about to interact with your computer. Then, if you have to pay for something on the web or in apps, it can light up in a certain color. It can flash green after a successful transaction, red after an unsuccessful one. It can use this color to warn of unauthorized access, or if it simply fails to authenticate the user.

Wilder speculations are, for example, that Apple will link various notifications to the button. It could inform you about missed events in different colors. By placing a finger, perhaps other than the one intended for verification, you would then get to a special interface of the system, where you would have an overview of the notifications.

We'll find out if that's really the case on Monday, October 18, when the Unleashed event starts at 19 p.m. our time. Apart from the new MacBook Pro in sizes 14 and 16 inches, the arrival of AirPods is also definitely expected. The more daring also talk about a larger iMac, a more powerful Mac mini or a MacBook Air.
