iPhone 4S sold out in Hong Kong in 10 minutes (7/11)

After the iPhone 4S was made available for pre-order in Hong Kong last Friday, it disappeared from the shelves almost immediately, again demonstrating Apple's long-standing success in China.

"In our view, this is a very positive sign for iPhone 4S demand in China – Hong Kong represents the first entry of the new smartphone in a very fast-growing region and we expect the 4S to hit China in December,"analyst Brian White said at a news conference for investors on Monday. "We believe that this quick sell-out will drive the iPhone 4S to the wider Chinese community, which affects only the limited language capabilities of Siri, which has not been launched in Mandarin and Chinese."

Apple's voice recognition technology is one of the major new features in the new iPhone 4S, yet Siri remains labeled "beta" software. Currently, Siri only understands English from the US, Great Britain and Australia, and now only French and German. That's why Apple promised to support more languages in 2012, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Italian and Spanish.

The strong start to iPhone 4S sales in China is very good news for Apple, as this nation of more than a billion people is becoming a very important part of the company's market for its continued growth. In the September quarter, Apple's sales in China were up to $4,5 billion, which represents 16% of the company's total sales.

To put that in perspective, Apple's revenue from China was up 270% year-over-year. Yet in the company's 2009 fiscal year, China accounted for just 2% of Apple's revenue.

Security expert discovers serious hole that allows iOS to be hacked (8/11)

Security expert To Charlie Miller managed to push an application into the App Store that contained malware and allowed unauthorized code to run on the phone. The latter then enabled the attacker to read contacts on the phone, make the phone vibrate, steal the user's photos and other unpleasant actions for the user. He managed this whole stunt thanks to a hole in iOS.

Miller already managed to hack a MacBook Air via Safari in 2008, he is no stranger to Apple products. Apple's reaction was not long in coming, his app was pulled from the App Store and his developer account was canceled. Apple fixed the bug in the iOS 5.0.1 update. You can see how dangerous the bug would be in the wrong hands in the video Miller uploaded:

Phil Schiller Takes New Position (11/11)

It could just be a cosmetic change, but it's also possible that the title change gives Phil Schiller more powers. IN list of Apple's top executives Phil Schiller is no longer listed as Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing, but only as Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing.

The removal of the word "product" may be due to the departure of Ron Johnson, who took care of retail sales at Apple, and they have not yet found a replacement for him in Cupertino. However, Apple did not issue any statement to alert journalists or investors, so if Schiller's workload has undergone certain changes, they will be rather minor.

Please turn off iTunes Match on all your computers and iOS devices. (…)

Songs on your computer should not be affected. As always, back up regularly and don't delete music you've added to iCloud from your computer.

Apple Developer Program Support

Apple has already sent out several similar emails, but only now has it determined the exact time when it will delete the libraries, and at the same time stated that "prepares to launch iTunes Match.”

Apple Launches Worldwide First Generation iPod Nano Exchange Program (11/11)

Those who own the first generation iPod nano should take note. Apple is now offering possibility of exchange of this device as new because it detected a possible battery overheating problem.

Dear iPod nano owner,

Apple has determined that in very rare cases, the iPod nano (1st generation) battery can overheat and cause damage. iPod nanos sold between September 2005 and December 2006 may have a battery defect.

We have found that the problem is from one particular supplier. Although battery overheating is not a common occurrence, the older the device, the more likely it is to happen.

Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st generation) and order a free replacement device.

Apple had to introduce such a program back in 2009 in South Korea and in 2010 in Japan, now it provides in other countries as well, but the Czech Republic is missing (at least so far). They can exchange their iPod nano in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain and the United States.

iOS 5.0.1 didn't fix all battery problems, it did cause a few more (11/11)

The quick iOS update was supposed to provide relief to users who experienced a dramatic reduction in phone battery life in iOS 5. Owners of the new iPhone 4S were mainly affected, but problems were also reported by iPhone 4 users, especially the 3GS. However, for many, the new update did not help at all, on the contrary. Some users who didn't have a problem with the battery have a new one. iOS 5.01 also brought other problems.

Users have a problem with the address book, when they do not see the name of the saved contact when they receive a call, but only the number. Czech T-Mobile customers report loss of signal, network outages, inability to make calls or change PIN code. Apple says it's aware of the lingering issues and is working to fix them, but it should act quickly because it's dealing with "Batterygate," a slight follow-up to last year's "Antennagate"
