Adobe Reader for iOS released (October 17)

Adobe has released more apps for iOS. This time, it has added Adobe Reader to its portfolio, i.e. a PDF viewing application, which does not bring anything new compared to other third-party applications, but still finds its users. Adobe Reader allows you to read PDFs, share them via e-mail and via the web, and you can also open PDFs from other applications in it. Text can also be searched, bookmarked and printed using AirPrint.

Adobe Reader is available for free at App Store for iPhone and iPad.

Apple will allow Android device manufacturers to license only certain patents (17/10)

The information may have brought some relief to manufacturers of devices with the Android operating system. According to a 65-page document that Apple submitted to the Australian court, where the lawsuit between Samsung and Apple is currently ongoing (Samsung is not yet allowed to sell some of its tablets there), Apple is willing to license some of its patents. However, these are very general "lower-level" patents, Apple keeps the majority of patents for itself. Microsoft has previously taken a much more generous step in this regard, licensing its mobile patents for a total of about $5 per Android device. Paradoxically, it earns more from the sale of devices with this operating system than from its own Windows Phone 7.

Apple wanted to buy Dropbox in 2009 (18/10)

Dropbox is probably the most famous web storage that is used by millions of users on their devices. However, if Drew Houston, the founder of the service, had decided otherwise in 2009, Dropbox could now be integrated into the Apple ecosystem. Steve Jobs offered him big money.

In December 2009, Jobs, Houston and his partner Arash Ferdowsi met in Jobs' office in Cupertino. Houston was excited about the meeting because he had always considered Jobs his hero and immediately wanted to show Jobs his project on his laptop, but the Apple co-founder stopped him by saying "I know what you're doing."

Jobs saw great value in Dropbox and wanted to acquire it, but Houston refused. Although Apple offered him a nine-figure sum. Jobs then wanted to meet with representatives of Dropbox at their workplace in San Francisco, but Houston refused because he was afraid of revealing some company secrets, so he preferred to meet with Jobs in Silicon Valley. Since then, Jobs has not contacted Dropbox.

Steve Jobs worked until his last day. He was thinking about a new product (19.)

That Steve Jobs breathed for Apple until the last possible moment may seem like a well-worn cliché, but there is probably more truth to this statement than it might seem. Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son, who had a meeting with Tim Cook on the day of the iPhone 4S launch, spoke about Jobs' work commitment.

"When I had a meeting with Tim Cook, he suddenly said, 'Masa, I'm sorry, but I have to cut our meeting short.' 'Where are you going,' I countered. 'My boss is calling me,' he replied. That was the day Apple announced the iPhone 4S, and Tim says Steve called him to talk about the new product. And the day after that he died.”

American operator AT&T activated a million iPhone 4S in less than a week (October 20)

The iPhone 4S went on sale in the United States last Friday, and the operator AT&T could announce the following Thursday that it had already activated one million new Apple phones on its network. And this despite the fact that the iPhone 4S is also sold by competitors Verizon and Sprint. However, users choose AT&T primarily for its connection speed, according to president and CEO Ralph de la Vega.

“AT&T is the only carrier in the world that started selling the iPhone in 2007 and is the only US carrier that supports 4G speeds for the iPhone 4S. It's no wonder customers choose a network where they can download twice as fast as their competitors.”

Sales of the iPhone 4S are historically the most successful of all iPhones in the first weeks, and we can only wait to see how the situation develops in the Czech Republic.

Apple announced this year's iOS 5 Tech Talk World Tour program (October 20)

Since 2008, Apple has held so-called iPhone Tech Talk World Tours every year around the world, during which it brings iOS closer to developers, answers their questions and helps with development. It is a kind of smaller analogue of the developer conference WWDC. This year, the Tech Talk World Tour will naturally focus on the latest iOS 5.

They can look forward to visiting experts from next month until January in Europe, Asia and America. Apple will visit Berlin, London, Rome, Beijing, Seoul, Sao Paulo, New York, Seattle, Austin and Texas. The advantage over the expensive WWDC ticket is the fact that Tech Talks are free.

However, if any of you are thinking of going to this conference, the only one that comes into consideration is probably the one in Rome, the others are already full. iCloud has problems syncing in iWork (21/10)

iCloud was supposed to bring easy data synchronization, including documents from iWork. But as it seems, iCloud is more of a nightmare for iWork. Many users complain mainly about the disappearance of documents without the possibility of their recovery. If you restart your device and then start syncing in Pages, Numbers, or Keynote, you'll see your documents literally disappear before your eyes. A possible solution is to delete the iCloud account in Settings and then adding it again. Problems occur mainly with previous MobileMe users, who have a problem with e-mail reception, for example. You can see what such a disappearance of documents looks like on the attached video:

A slightly touching story from the Apple Store (October 22)

A 10-year-old girl from Utah, USA, will surely remember her visit for a long time. This girl has wanted an iPod touch for a long time, so she saved money from her pocket money and her birthday for 9 months. When she finally had some savings, she and her mom went to the nearest Apple Store to buy her dream device. They arrived at the store at 10:30 a.m., but the staff told them that they would be closed from 11:00 a.m. to 14:00 p.m. and that they could not buy anything now.

As the disappointed little girl and her mother left the store, one of the employees quickly ran out of the store to catch up with them and told them that the store manager had decided to make an exception and that they could now purchase the device. After returning to the Apple Store, both got the attention of all the employees and their purchase was accompanied by a huge round of applause. In addition to her dream iPod touch, the little girl also got a wonderful experience. It's not a story for a book, but you have to be happy about the little things.

TomTom navigation optimized for iPad (October 22)

One of the big players in navigation software, TomTom, has released an update to its navigation systems that finally brings native support for the iPad. So if you want to use the 9,7″ display for navigation and you have already purchased TomTom on iPhone, you have the option. The update is free and TomTom will become a universal app for both iPhone and iPad, so there is no need to buy the app twice. iPhone 3G owners will certainly be pleased that TomTom still supports their device, however, they will not see the new features that the update offers in addition to iPad support.

TomTom also recently introduced the Europe version to European App Stores, including the Czech one, which contains map data for all supported European countries. Until now, this version was only available in a few selected countries. Paradoxically, it was possible to buy it, for example, in the USA, where users there hardly use it outside of holidays. TomTom Europe is available for download here for €89,99.
