African mobile company creates 'black' emoji (30/3)

Last Sunday in Apple Week, we mentioned that Apple is looking to increase (or introduce – the non-white emoji is just a turbaned smiley and a face with vaguely Asian features) ethnic diversity. A petition has since been created asking Apple to put more emphasis on the issue. However, one African mobile device maker, Mi-Fone, was faster. Oju Africa (the name of the Mi-Fone department, where "oju" means faces) introduced a set of black smiley faces.

So far they are only available for Android, a port for iOS is being worked on.

The first and wonderful Apple Store opened in Turkey (April 2)

The first Turkish and Eastern European Apple Store was opened yesterday. It is located in Istanbul, in the center of the new shopping center Zorlu Center. It is somewhat reminiscent of the "main" Apple Store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. Its main, two-story part is below ground level. Above the surface rises only a glass prism surrounded by a black stone fountain and covered by a white roof with a large Apple logo, visible from the upper floors of the surrounding building. Initially, it was speculated whether Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, would also arrive at the opening ceremony, but in the end, the Turkish Apple Store he mentioned only on his Twitter.

Microsoft's Siri competitor is called Cortana (2/4)

Microsoft on Wednesday announced a new version of its mobile OS, Windows Phone 8.1, with one of the main innovations being a voice assistant named Cortana, after the character from the game Halo. It should be able to do basically the same as Siri, but it should be even more intelligent, because it will work with the content of the given phone and the instructions of its user and then adapt its actions to them. She is voiced by actress Jen Taylor, who also voiced the "character" in Halo.

WP 8.1 will be released to the public between the end of April and the beginning of May, Cortana will only be available to US users for now.
