The turn of January and February was marked by a new jOBS film. But Apple Week also informs about the illegal unlocking of iPhones, negotiations between Apple and HBO and other interesting things from the apple world.

Ashton Kutcher tried Jobs' fruit diet and ended up in the hospital (January 28)

Ashton Kutcher took his role as Steve Jobs in jOBS very conscientiously, which eventually landed him in a hospital bed. The 34-year-old Kutcher prescribed Jobs' fruit diet and had to be hospitalized a few days before filming. "If you're on a fruit-only diet, that can lead to some problems," Kutcher explained at the Sundance Film Festival, where jOBS premiered. "I ended up in the hospital about two days before filming started. I was in a lot of pain. My pancreas was completely out of whack, which was scary,” Kutcher admitted. Jobs died of pancreatic cancer in 2011.

Wozniak refused to collaborate on jOBS movie after reading the script, promised to help the second film from Sony (28/1)

The film jOBS, which revolves around Apple and its co-founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. While Steve Jobs could not contribute to the creation of an independent film for obvious reasons, Wozniak had the opportunity, but after reading the first version of the script, he backed out of a possible collaboration. Instead, he's helping with a film from Sony Pictures, which will also be about Steve Jobs. "I was contacted early on," Wozniak told The Verge. “I read the script until I could stomach it because it was bad. Eventually, people from Sony also contacted me and I finally decided to work with them. You can't work on two films and get paid for it," Wozniak said, revealing that he didn't like the presence of drugs in the script for jOBS, for example, when Jobs was supposed to offer Wozniak. At the same time, Woz claims that such a situation has never occurred.

The App Store earned 3,5 times more than Google Play (January 30)

Server & Hosting App Annie released the full-year sales results of the two main digital distribution channels for mobile apps – the App Store and Google Play. Apple saw record growth especially in December, when sales increased by about a third compared to the previous month. Android also saw a big increase, with revenue doubling in the winter months compared to last quarter, yet Google Play still earns 3,5x less than the App Store despite having multiple times the market share. There are several factors at work here – on the one hand, less popularity of paid apps, generally less interest in apps, and also piracy, which is around 90% for many paid apps. In terms of geographic distribution, 60% of all revenues are in the US, Great Britain, Japan and Canada. However, App Annie saw a big growth in China, where there is an increasing interest in Apple products.

Phone unlocking has been illegal in the US since January 26 (January 31)

Unlocking iPhones is now illegal in the United States. However, don't confuse this term with "jailbreaking" because unlocking is not the same thing. Unlocking an iPhone is a process where you "open" your device to all carriers. If you buy an iPhone at a discounted price from one of the American operators, it may be blocked on that particular network. If you want to use it with another operator, then you are either out of luck, or you would have to so-called unlock the iPhone. However, this is now illegal for smartphones purchased after January 26, 2013 in the US. Operators can still unlock phones, but no one else can. Jailbreak, on the other hand, will remain legal until at least 2015 thanks to an exemption from the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act).

6.1% of users downloaded iOS 4 in the first 25 days (February 1)

Based on data from Onswipe, a developer of touch websites, we can say that after four days, the new iOS 6.1 has reached a quarter of possible devices. Onswipe has a large user base of over 13 million active users, and 21% of them had iOS 6.1 installed within the first two days. In the next two days, the number increased by another five percentage points. The executive director of Onswipe Jason Baptiste believes that the rapid adoption of the new version of the operating system is due to the simplicity of the entire update process brought by iOS 5.

Apple is in talks with HBO about content for Apple TV (February 1)

According to Bloomberg, Apple is in talks with HBO to include HBO Go in the Apple TV offering, which would join other services such as Netflix or Hulu. The service is currently available for iOS devices, but bringing it directly to Apple TV would be the next step towards a complete TV solution from Apple. In the case of HBO, however, the service would be somewhat controversial, because unlike Hulu or Netflix, the user does not need to have a separate subscription to another service from the cable company, they only need to register. The presence of HBO would not be a complete departure from classic cable TV through streaming, but rather just an additional service for existing subscribers.

USA: Apple became the most successful phone manufacturer for the first time in history (1. 2)

According to Strategy Analytics, a consumer electronics research firm, Apple has for the first time in history ranked first as the most successful phone seller in the US. It thus surpassed Samsung, which was placed in the first position every quarter for five years. The enormous interest in the latest iPhone 5 helped Apple achieve this result, however, the other two older phone models that Apple currently has in its portfolio did not do badly either. In the last quarter, Apple sold 17,7 million iPhones, while Samsung sold 16,8 million phones and third-place LG 4,7 million units. It is worth noting the fact that only three phone models were enough to reach the first place of Apple, while other companies offer several dozen of them. The results do not only apply to smartphones, but to all phones.
