That's it uploads to pirates, because vampirizing has never been easier than right now. However, Apple calculated that protection using a serial number does not protect much against illegal distribution, so with this protection they rather unnecessarily make life unpleasant for people who bought a legal copy. Thus, Apple follows the iLife package, which also did not require a serial number.
Maybe Apple isn't so much interested in protecting iWork from piracy, but it would rather be expanded as much as possible between people and thus brought the iWork.com service for document sharing more into the center of attention. iWork.com is in beta and is free for now, but Apple plans to charge annual fees like MobileMe.
That's right, iWork is even free for some dear ones. Especially for most projects and when working with Office users.

That's what I say to myself every time I run into a problem... It didn't cost me a little money and then I deal with some registrations and the like. All I had to do was download it somewhere and I would have peace of mind... :-(
