We've had the Apple iPod touch 7th generation here since May 28, 2019. So even though it may seem completely forgotten, next year it will be "only" three years old, which isn't too much. The problem lies elsewhere, in the ignoring of this hardware not only by users, but also by Apple itself. So the question is whether to update it or cut it. And what comes after?

Does getting an iPod touch make sense right now? For the vast majority of users, no. Its small display, weak performance, lousy camera, and above all the high price are to blame. In every respect, it is therefore worth reaching for an iPad or an iPhone SE. The price of these devices is of course slightly higher, but on the other hand, they will provide disproportionately more.

The most speculation about the new iPod touch was in May this year, i.e. before WWDC21, where it could theoretically have already been introduced. There was some hope even before the October keynote, where 3rd generation AirPods and HomePods were expected, so it would make sense to introduce a new iPod. It did not happen. Will that happen in the spring of 2022? It is a difficult question.

Apple should take a risk

According to may concept it would be a very nice and thin device based on the iPhone 12/13 shape. A smaller cutout could be an advantage, because Face ID will not be present here, of course. It wouldn't even be a problem to have just one camera, if it was the wide-angle one from the current iPhone. If he also got his chip, it would certainly be a high-quality and very pleasant device. The question is, of course, the set price, which would have to stick with the current generation.

Whatever such a device might look like and do, would it make sense in a portfolio? Probably not. Times have changed and practically no one needs such a device. Instead of such a product, wouldn't it be better if Apple revived the iPod line with some device based on the previous portfolio? So the successor to the Classic, Nano or Shuffle model?

With the newly introduced Apple Music Voice Plan, the latter would certainly make sense. When his era ended, he was worth around CZK 1 on the domestic market. This strategy could also be stamped by the novelty. For example, no internal storage with close cooperation with Siri and perhaps an eSIM so that you can listen to data even outside of Wi-Fi. For example, for less mobile athletes who do not want an Apple Watch, this could be a dream product.

There is one catch

If you look on the web Patently apple, that is, the website that brings the latest patents that Apple is pursuing, the last mention of the iPod here is from 2018. But it was more about patenting the appearance (with a cross after the funus) and a few unimportant novelties that do not look revolutionary in any way. And since it's been quiet since then, iPods don't have a particularly bright future. Rather than anything else, we're actually saying goodbye to this product line. However, it is clear that the current iPod touch will still be with us at least until the release of iOS 16, because you can still run the current iOS 15 on it too.
