This is a rather hot topic - the government in Russia directly interferes with what electronics manufacturers have to recommend to customers for content. In addition, this recommendation must be displayed when the phone is first started. Maybe it wouldn't even be such a problem if it wasn't Russia, it wasn't mandatory and there weren't sanctions for it. Of course, everything also applies to Apple.

Valid in Russia from April 1, 2020 new law, which orders electronics manufacturers to present users with a list of exclusively Russian applications. This is not only about manufacturers of mobile phones and tablets, but also about computers and smart TVs. Just in case, several Russian titles are selected, which are presented to the user right in the initial settings of the device so that he can install them.

Not only e-mail client and web browser but also ICQ

In the case of the iOS operating system, i.e. iPhones Apple, these are 16 applications that the owner of a new device can immediately install without having to search for them in App Store, but it doesn't have to either. These applications are not part of the system. Apple just updated the phone's settings guide by means of an update on the server, which will now display a list of Russian titles and the possibility of installing them on the territory of Russia. If the user does not want and cancels the offer, whenever he later finds it in App Store. Titles installed in this way can also be deleted from the device at any time in the classic way.

Among the recommended applications, you can install, for example, an antivirus from Kaspersky, an e-mail application from Mail.ru, as well as the very popular chat title ICQ in our country, which is owned by the Mail.ru group. In addition, owners of iPhones purchased in Russia will find a title for live streaming of OK Live video, or Russian social networks VKontakte a Odnoklassniki. There are also titles from Yandex, i.e. its Internet browser, maps and cloud storage.

But who ultimately benefits from this?

Of course, the Russian government presents this as a friendly step towards users who can start using their favorite titles as soon as possible without having to search for them in App Store. At the same time, they also help domestic developers. But even this can be a bit questionable, because these are huge corporations. What they don't talk about anymore is possible population control. ICQ, for example, has an obligation to save all data and, if necessary, provide it to the appropriate authorities, i.e. typically the secret services.

The law has been in effect since April 1st, so from this date all electronics must somehow offer the possibility of installing Russian applications. As of July 1, however, companies face sanctions, initially financial. For a company as huge as Apple, this might not be as much of a problem as what might come later. Apple needs to sell its products on the territory of Russia, because its popularity continues to rise there, and it cannot afford to leave this market.

Apple Watch

Even so, this is a rather remarkable concession from a company that usually maintains strict control over the process of setting up its devices and does not let itself be talked into dictating the content it can and cannot offer (see the case with Epic Games). But this is not the first concession on the territory of Russia. Apple was already willing change the documents the Maps application to mark Crimea as Russian territory and at the same time from the Apple Watch removed the dial referring to the LGBT community.
