LPDDR5 RAM memory was introduced to the market already in 2019, so it is definitely not a new thing. But as Apple is known for, it only introduces similar technological improvements over time, and now it finally seems that the iPhone 14 Pro will be on the way. And it's about time, because the competition is already using LPDDR5 extensively.

DigiTimes magazine brought information about it. According to him, Apple should use LPDDR14 in the iPhone 5 Pro models, while LPDDR4X will remain in the basic series. The higher series has the advantage of being up to 1,5 times faster compared to the previous solution, and at the same time significantly less energy-intensive, thanks to which the phones could achieve longer endurance even while maintaining the current battery capacity. The size should also remain, i.e. 6 GB instead of the previously speculated 8 GB.

However, as is known, iPhones are not as demanding on memory as Android devices due to the composition of their system. Although we've known the LPDDR5 specification for three years now, it's still cutting-edge technology at the moment. Although it was already surpassed in 2021 in the form of an updated version of LPDDR5X, none of the major manufacturers have yet implemented it in their own solution.

Precisely because of the RAM memory requirements of Android devices, the priority for them to ensure smooth operation is not only enough virtual memory, but also that it is sufficiently fast. It is precisely in these devices that this technology has a clear justification. So even though Apple is only introducing it now, that doesn't mean it's too late for iPhones. They didn't really need it until now. But as the demands of modern games in particular grow, the time has come for Apple to follow the trend.

Smartphones with LPDDR5

Currently, many companies offer LPDDR5 in their flagships, among which, of course, the permanent leader Samsung is not missing. He already used it in his Galaxy S20 Ultra model, which was introduced in 2020 and had 12 GB of RAM as a base, but the highest configuration offered up to 16 GB, and it was no different a year later with the Galaxy S21 series. This year, however, he understood that he had significantly oversized the device, and for example the Galaxy S22 Ultra already has "only" 12 GB of RAM. LPDDR5 memories can also be found in the lightweight Galaxy S20 and S21 FE models.

Other OEMs using the Android operating system along with LPDDR5 include OnePlus (9 Pro 5G, 9RT 5G), Xiaomi (Mi 10 Pro, Mi 11 series), Realme (GT 2 Pro), Vivo (X60, X70 Pro), Oppo ( Find X2 Pro) or IQOO (3). These are therefore mostly flagship phones, also for the reason that customers can pay well for them. LPDDR5 technology is still relatively expensive and limited even to flagship chipsets.
