Other connectivity tests show how the new iPhones fare in terms of mobile data transfer speeds. The week before last, the first tests appeared on the web, in which the difference in mobile Internet connection speeds between iPhone X and iPhone XS (XS Max) is noticeable. The new iPhones with modems from Intel really have an advantage over last year's ones. However, if we compare their performance with the competition, it is not clear-cut.

Foreign server PCMag and Ookla, which focuses on providing Internet connection speed benchmarks, came up with results that clearly show an increase in the connection speed of the new iPhones compared to last year's predecessors. However, it can also be seen that Apple is still fighting a relatively close battle with the flagships of competing platforms.

As you can see from the graphs in the gallery below, the new Intel XMM 7560 LTE modem handily beats last year's Intel/Qualcomm 7480. However, the Qualcomm X20 found in the Samsung Note 9, for example, is slightly more capable, as is its less powerful X16 variant found in the Google Pixel 2 model.

Speed testing took place on the LTE networks of the three largest American operators (Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile) and several Canadian ones. In situations where the signal was at its strongest, the new iPhone's transfer speeds were on par with the competition, but once the signal strength began to drop, so did download and upload speeds. Compared to the competition, the differences are minimal, probably imperceptible in practice. Compared to the iPhone X, however, this is a significant step forward.

In situations with a really bad signal, the new iPhone still does relatively well, but as the graphs indicate, with almost minimal signal levels, the modems in competing smartphones do better. In general, however, it can be said that the measured differences are so small that the user has no chance to notice them in practice. What can be noted, on the other hand, is the difference in transmission speeds across generations. On some networks, the iPhone XS achieved more than 20Mb/s faster connections than the iPhone X. When it comes to comparing the connection speed with other flagships, the iPhone XS does very well - only surpassed by the Galaxy Note 9. In terms of data connectivity, it is so noticeable that there has been quite a big step forward since last year.
