If we look at the list of differences between the iPhone XS/XS Max and the latest novelty called the iPhone XR, the most noticeable will be the display and the camera. It's the absence of a second camera lens that makes the XR a bit cheaper. However, the concession is not free, and owners of a cheaper iPhone have to do without some specific functions. However, it now appears that what was originally supposed to be missing from the iPhone XR could be available in the finale.

Due to the absence of a second camera lens, the iPhone XR does not support some Portrait modes. A phone with a single lens cannot read the depth of the captured scene as accurately and create a 3D map of the composition, which is necessary for portrait mode to work properly. Thanks to this, the iPhone XR only supports a limited number of effects, and only if the photographed object is a person. Once the phone does not detect a human face, the Portrait mode cannot be used. However, that could change.

The developers behind the photo app Halide have let it be known that they are working on an upgraded version of their application that will bring a full-fledged portrait mode to the iPhone XR. Full-fledged in this context means that it will not be limited only to the human face, but it will be used to take pictures of animals or other objects, for example.

The developers confirm that they managed to get portrait mode on the iPhone XR working on photos of pets, but the results are still not ideal and, above all, consistent. It turned out that it works to a limited extent in practice, but the software needs to be fine-tuned. The iPhone XR, with its single 13 MPx sensor, is able to capture roughly a quarter of the depth of field data compared to the iPhone XS. The missing information must be "computed" by software, which is not easy to develop. Eventually, however, it should be possible, and iPhone XR owners could thus get the opportunity to take pictures of their pets, for example, and use the portrait mode function.
