When Apple introduced its "low-cost" iPhone XR, many people predicted it would be a failure. But it turned out that the opposite was true, and that the company knew very well what it was doing and why it should release this particular model. Data from Omdia showed this week that the iPhone XR was last year's most popular smartphone. Sales of this model surpassed those of last year's iPhone 11 by an estimated nine million.

Apple has not published data on the number of iPhones sold for a long time, so we have to rely on the data of various analytical companies. According to Omnia's calculations, the Cupertino giant managed to sell 46,3 million units of its iPhone XR last year. In 2018, this number was 23,1 million units. As for the iPhone 11, Apple sold 37,3 million units, according to Omnia. In the Omnia ranking, Apple took the first two places with its iPhone XR and iPhone 11, the rest of the first five ranks were occupied by Samsung with its Galaxy A10, Galaxy A50 and Galaxy A20. The iPhone 11 Pro Max was ranked sixth with less than eighteen million units sold.

The iPhone XR's record-breaking first place in the list of the most popular smartphones was a big surprise for many. Even a number of analysts and other experts did not expect such a great success of the cheapest iPhone from last year. One of the biggest advantages of this model in the eyes of many consumers is its relatively low price, which makes it an affordable Apple product, even in markets where cheaper smartphones from competing manufacturers usually dominate. At the same time, however, the iPhone XR cannot exactly be described as cheap in terms of design or functions. It is far from high-end models in many ways, but it can boast a long battery life, the Face ID function and a relatively high-quality camera, and it is also equipped with an A12 processor.
