We are rather impatiently waiting for Apple's March keynote to see the 3rd generation of its iPhone SE. The models with this nickname are considered by Apple as lightweight versions of their previous series, with the same design but updated specifications. But Apple is not the only one to implement this strategy.

The first iPhone SE was clearly based on the iPhone 5S, the second, on the contrary, already on the iPhone 8. It is currently the last representative of Apple phones that still retains the old look with Touch ID located under the display. The new 3rd generation will probably be based on the iPhone XR or 11, but it will certainly be improved not only in terms of performance.

Fan Edition

If Apple marks its lightweight versions with the epithet SE, Samsung does so with the abbreviation FE. But if we can argue what SE really means, the South Korean manufacturer gives us a clear answer here. Although we already have the Galaxy S22 series here, Samsung introduced the Galaxy S21 FE model only recently, i.e. at the beginning of January this year. In his presentation, it is not about using the old chassis and improving the "innards". So the Galaxy S21 FE is a slightly different phone than its predecessor.

It has a 6,4" display, which is therefore 0,2" larger, but it has 2 GB less RAM for the basic storage (Galaxy S21 has 8 GB). The battery has increased by 500 mAh to a total of 4500 mAh, the aperture of the primary 12 MPx camera has improved from f/2,2 to f/1,8, but on the ultra-wide angle it has deteriorated, and exactly the opposite. Instead of a 64MP telephoto lens, only 8MP is present. The front camera jumped from 10 to 32 MPx, while the successor in the form of the Galaxy S22 retains only 10 MPx resolution.

So there are quite a lot of changes and you could actually say that it is a very different phone, which just keeps a very similar design. So legally, it just didn't improve. But the fact that the two models are not even a year apart is also to blame, while Apple goes back to the distant past. After all, this also distinguishes it from other competitors. However, Samsung doesn't just stick with this "lightweight" version, as it also likes to use the Lite moniker. Recently, this has been more the case with tablets than with smartphones (e.g. Galaxy Tab A7 Lite).

Lite designation

Precisely because most manufacturers have adopted the Lite brand, i.e. the brand for something cheaper, as their own, Samsung slowly retreated from it and came up with its FE. The top line of Xiaomi's models is called the 11, the slightly lower 11T, followed by the 11 Lite (4G, 5G). But if the "elevens" cost CZK 20, you can buy those labeled Lite for as little as seven thousand. It's lightened up here in all directions. Then there is also Honor. His Honor 50 5G costs CZK 13, while the Honor 50 Lite costs exactly half that. The Lite has a bigger display, but a worse processor, less RAM, a worse camera setup, etc.

Simply "and"

Google, for example, is following suit with its Pixel phones. He threw out any markings that indicated a cheaper version of something that already existed, or "special edition" and "fan edition" labels. Its Pixel 3a and 3a XL, as well as the 4a and 4a (5G) or 5a are also cheaper versions of their better-equipped brothers, they just don't show it so blatantly.
