As it seems, Apple didn't completely bury the iPhone SE after all. After all, other information has emerged that they are counting on him in the not-too-distant future. But what is striking is what model it will ultimately be based on, and what it will have in addition to the basic series.

In early January, we heard that Apple would not be renewing the iPhone SE with any future generation. It was mentioned by the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who now denies these reports. The iPhone SE 4th generation is finally said to be finally will be. It should be based on the iPhone 14 instead of the iPhone XR with the same size 6,1” OLED display that BOE will reportedly supply (due to lower costs).

Own 5G as fighting windmills

At the same time, it should be the first iPhone to contain Apple's own 5G chip, which has already been speculated about in the past (however, it should only support Sub6 5G, not mmWave. The latter works on radio bands from 24 GHz to 40 GHz, while Sub-6GHz works on frequencies of 6 GHz and lower, you can find more here.

For the very reason that Apple will use its 5G chip in the future iPhone SE as its first own phone, it will fulfill a certain role as a guinea pig. If something goes wrong, it goes wrong on a more affordable device than the one that costs around 30 thousand CZK. But if something really goes wrong, no one who pays even "just" the 15 CZK will forgive Apple. In addition, it is certainly not appropriate to approach a product for such money with an either-or style.

A portfolio with an iPhone SE 4 doesn't make much sense

There are two scenarios when we could expect a new iPhone SE. The first is next spring, when Apple will still have leeway to tweak its chip before the iPhone 16 arrives in September 2024, which could also include it. The second date seems to be not until spring 2025 - considering the lifespan of the iPhone 14, it would make more sense.

The iPhone 14 still has a long life ahead of it. Apple is now selling the iPhone 12 in its Apple Online Store. It will be discontinued this September, but the iPhone 13 will not be released until September 2024, and the iPhone 14 should therefore not be released until September 2025. In order for Apple to sell the iPhone SE 4th generation at the same time it doesn't make much sense with the iPhone 14, because it should put it above it in terms of price, even if it will have the same equipment but a newer chip, but logically it should be more affordable.

All of this demonstrates Apple's mistake of not having a larger portfolio of iPhones in a wider price range. Samsung sells its smartphones starting at a few thousand CZK to top models for as little as 45 thousand CZK. Of course, it also tests its technologies on the cheaper ones, especially Exynos chips. Its cheapest 5G phone starts at CZK 5, and the company certainly has room for some shortcomings that Apple should definitely not afford at a price three times higher.
