That iOS is probably the most secure mobile operating system today is not an open secret, and at a time when the surveillance of citizens by the NSA and other agencies is on the agenda, security in general is a hot topic. The Gamma Group, a renowned company engaged in spying on phones for government agencies, also confirmed the primacy in iOS security. Their software solution, a spyware called FinSpy, helps to intercept calls and obtain various data from smartphones, among the customers of this company are for example the governments of Germany, Russia and Iran.
Recently, a document regarding its FinSpy application was leaked from Gamma Group. According to him, spyware can hack into any version of Android, older BlackBerry versions (before BB10) or Symbian phones. iOS is listed in the table with a note that an untethered jailbreak is required, without which FinSpy has no way to get into the system. Thus, users who have not breached the security of their iPhone through a jailbreak do not have to worry that a government agency could eavesdrop on them through the mentioned software. At the same time, Gamma Group is one of the renowned companies in this industry. Also interesting is the fact that FinSpy does not support any version of the Windows Phone operating system, only older Windows Mobile. It is not entirely clear whether this is its good security or the low priority for this system at Gamma Group.
Apple often mentions the security of its system, after all according to the analytical company F-Secure virtually no malware targets iOS (successfully), while rival Android accounts for 99 percent of all attacks on mobile platforms.
I think it would be worth writing a little more comprehensive article about it. This is slightly misleading and may lead people using iOS devices to be less cautious. Just because JB is required doesn't mean people who haven't jailbroken are safe. Most of their tracking tools come with a slightly modified version of the jailbreak tool that works completely automatically. There are even ways to bypass the connected PC's trust dialog.
Correct reminder, but we are already in the area of physical security in general. i.e. don't give anything out of hand, don't connect anywhere, etc... and this applies in general.
Don't be silly. We all know iOS is shit. Everyone knows that.
So government agencies can easily look at me there, mainly so that thieves do not bypass my security...
Good article title. It would be just as reasonable to call it BlackBerry untraceable or Windows Phone untraceable. Understandably, everyone goes to watch. This is not to say that Android should not push for consistent system security. But they are apparently looking for a more developer-friendly way than the one used by Apple. Good luck with that.
Does this mean that despite skyrocketing sandboxing, iOS 7.0.x is easily hackable? So not only do you brick-nes older iShit/iPad, but apart from the beautiful design of the new environment, you are still just as vulnerable. I don't see this as "good" news :(
iOS runs system parts outside of the Sandbox – if you jailbreak your phone, you can run apps outside of it. That 7.0.x 7.1 means that at the time of writing there was no untethered jailbreak tool available for 7.1.
I'll lock you in a pillowy room with no doors or windows and push you to the floor. That's iOS. Committing suicide is basically impossible in this situation. Or, Android - I'll drop you off downtown and commit suicide. No problem jumping from Nuselak. Well, I guess...
It could also be compared differently:
– Android = Older BMW without electronics – a car with a classic engine in which everyone can do whatever they want. Thanks to the absence of ESP and other things, he can drift with it and do tricks that 99% of people don't want and will never use. He's also much more likely to wrap that car around a tree.
– iOS = a car riddled with electronics – you can't mess with it and if someone tries to, the car will screw up. Do you want to skid? Sorry, but individual wheel traction control ensures that you go where you turn the steering wheel. Chances of getting wrapped around a tree are minimal unless you're a real beast.
