To be clear, the new iPhone 6 Plus is gigantic at first glance for an existing iPhone 5S user. And if you've used a 4S or older, you'll probably find it pretty unusable right away. You may have read these sentences (with minor modifications) many times in the last few days, but after our brief examination of the new Apple phones, it is still impossible to resist them.
The surprise at the size of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, after all, is also proven by the reactions of visitors in Apple Stores. Immediately after seeing the new phones for the first time, or later on social networks, many Apple fans are surprised that the phone they are testing is not the iPhone 6 Plus, but just a "regular" iPhone XNUMX. We also heard enough of such surprised people on the first day of sales.
In fact, on September 19, the Appleman went to Dresden to bring you his first look at the news from Apple. Although none of us expected to bring even one of the phones home (some people reportedly didn't even have to wait in line for 18 hours), we still didn't want to miss the opportunity to at least see the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. And so we stood for long minutes at the racks in the middle of the Altmarkt-Galerie shopping center and a few days later we iPhone 6 description you can now read our first impressions from a short run of the larger model.
Although the iPhone 6 Plus is indeed an unusually large device, even at first glance there can be no doubt that it is a phone from Apple's workshop. Even if, for example, the power button has moved to the right side and the diagonal has increased by an inch and a half, the basic features of the iPhone are still here. One reason is, of course, the still unmistakable look of the iOS system, but the main one remains the strong edges above and below the phone's display, as well as the dominant home button.
These traditional features, which the iPhone has kept since the first model despite various changes, make Apple's phones unmistakable with the competition, and it's hard to imagine that the Californian company would ever abandon them. Forget the thick bezels on the sides of the display, and with the display off, you could easily mistake the iPhone for a number of Android flagship phones.
On the other hand, they limit the iPhone in a certain way. Why? For a phone with an unusual 16:9 display aspect ratio, its elongated character is further emphasized. It's essentially dead, unused space whose sole function is to make it easier for customers to recognize the Apple brand. This didn't matter much before, but with the iPhone 6 Plus, you will definitely notice this large empty area.
This is because the phone can lean forward when you hold it, and that's because most people with average-sized hands won't be able to hold it in their palm like previous models. Instead, it is necessary to place the larger of the iPhones on your fingers and balance it a little unusually. The mentioned length of the phone, which is due to the need to preserve the basic design elements, will also be noticed when you carry it in your pocket. If you're considering an iPhone 6 Plus, you can cut down on the long waiting list by ditching pants with small pockets. It won't work with them.
In terms of design, Apple has made a number of changes. The most noticeable and also the most discussed is the new shape of the back of the device. The sharp edges are gone, instead we can enjoy a rounded profile that somewhat resembles the original iPhone from 2007. A somewhat controversial design element are the dividing lines that allow the transmission of wireless technologies. They don't bother you too much with the dark model (at least according to our eyes), but with the white and gold ones they seem somewhat distracting. If you preferred lighter models for previous generations, now is the best time to change.
At first glance, the front of the device has not seen such changes, but at a second and more detailed look, it already does. Apple was able to process the glass in such a way that the display seems to flow seamlessly into the edges. The sharp edges of the iPhone 5S are completely gone, and the six-piece devices are more like a water-tossed pebble, modeled after the Palm Pre. (Incidentally, this device also "inspired" Apple in multitasking processing, for example.)
We must not forget the slimming of the phone, which is very important for marketing purposes. We have already written about this topic in the impression of a smaller iPhone 6 and we dedicated to him as well separate article, so here only in a nutshell. The excessive thinness of the new phones completely nullifies the improvement in the form of the round back of the device, which could have made holding the iPhone much more pleasant compared to the 5S model. At the same time, the iPhone 6 Plus is not helped by even the extra tenth of a millimeter compared to its smaller brother. In short, the iPhone 5C is the best of all Apple phones. Absolutely unmatched.
The second aspect associated with holding the phone, i.e. the practicality of such a large display, is a very subjective matter. During our (albeit short) testing, we were pleasantly surprised that handling the 5,5-inch iPhone is not as balanced as we expected. Yes, you will move the phone differently in your fingers during some actions, and yes, holding it with both hands is more comfortable. However, this does not mean that the iPhone 6 Plus is completely uncontrollable with one hand.
When moving around in various built-in applications, one thumb can get by, and with a little practice, one-handed operation will be relatively easy to manage. The biggest problem lies in the fact that you have to choose, so to speak, if you hold the phone higher, and therefore reach the upper display for example for the Notification Center, or lower, and you will have the bottom row of icons and the home button available. The second option seems to be better, because it is the only way to unlock the phone using Touch ID without straining your thumb. In addition, this button can also be used to switch to Reachability mode, when the top half of the display goes down. Despite everything, holding with both hands remains much more pleasant.
Whichever grip method you choose, the question remains whether a large display really makes sense at this point. The display area of the largest iPhone is really generous, but it displays almost the same content as its smaller counterpart. There are a few built-in applications that can use the newly available screen with the help of new horizontal modes, but unfortunately that's all for now.
In terms of size, the iPhone 6 Plus (at least in feel) is closer to the iPad mini than the iPhone 5, so we expected Apple to handle this size increase a little better. Unfortunately, however, the Californian company has largely resigned to this task, leaving all the work to developers. It's as if Apple has exhausted itself on the development of iOS 8 and has no more strength left to bring the system to a new dimension between the iPhone 6 and the iPad mini.
The advantage is that the new operating system, together with the new iPhone 6 Plus, brings so many improvements that we might be able to forget about the previous shortcoming during longer use. Let's briefly recall major changes: improved design, active notifications, expandability of built-in applications, new gestures or better connection with Mac.
The phone's hardware itself will then offer several other innovations, such as fundamental changes in the camera. And that's exactly what we tried (within the scope of the interior of the shopping center) last week. One thing is certain: megapixels aren't everything. Although some may have been disappointed after the keynote that Apple didn't give its new phones a new sensor with a megalomaniacal pixel count, the camera in the iPhone 6 Plus is better than ever.
Thanks to the new chip, you can start the camera faster, thanks to the new technologies you can focus faster and better, and as the first tests show, the resulting photos will also be nicer. Not in the number of pixels, but perhaps in color fidelity or performance in poor lighting conditions. And we must not forget about the software and optical stabilization, which really significantly helps video recording with the iPhone 6 Plus. (Instagram probably he will not be happy.)
In short, the camera really surprised and will certainly become one of the main strengths of both of the new Apple phones. Great color rendering, high-frequency video, high-quality image stabilization or automatic focus, which even a professional SLR cannot boast of. All of this speaks in favor of the iPhone. (All attached photos are taken with iPhone 6, you can see the capabilities of the new phones in image and video, for example, in the excellent reporting server The Verge.)
What to say in conclusion? There is no doubt that the iPhone 6 Plus is an amazing device and will sell well. Although he may find fewer interested parties than his smaller brother. If I were to share my opinion with you, I myself might be among those interested. am i crazy Should I go Android?
The reason is simple. After many years when Apple refused to give in to the world trend and stayed with smaller diagonals, the iPhone 6 Plus simply seems to me to be an interesting choice. Even though - like a number of "applists" - I am used to 3,5-inch and 4-inch phones, and such a large diagonal should rightly seem unusable to me, paradoxically, the radicality of this idea attracts me.
A whopping five full five inches is considered by many to be an abhorrent heresy that would keep Steve Jobs spinning in his grave. However, for me personally, upgrading to a really big phone seems like the right move. Even if I never really used all that space, worked my thumb crazy 24/6, and was supposed to return to more digestible dimensions in the next generation, I'm kind of inexplicably drawn to the iPhone XNUMX Plus.
Despite all the consideration of the negatives of the iPhone 6 Plus - its impracticality in holding and carrying, not using a large display, higher price, etc. - in the end, perhaps everything will be decided again and only emotions. Although I spent all those long minutes in the Dresden Apple Store convincing myself that the smaller iPhone 6 was the perfect device for me, having found just the right screen size, two days later I'm at home clutching the iPhone 6 Plus…which I cut out of cardboard.
I can ask the editor or anyone who was in Dresden if there are iphene (plus) in all colors to try, or if there is only one or two colors, thank you
Hello,
yes, they all have at least one piece.
They have two of each model and color ;-)
Thank you very much for your reply :-)
Does the iPhone 6 menu work like the one in the first picture? Do the icons rotate or is this only for 6+?
6+ only
"Great color rendering, high-frequency video, high-quality image stabilization or automatic focus, which even a professional SLR cannot boast of."
Do you think a lie repeated a hundred times will become reality?
Where exactly am I lying please?
For example, the phrase "that even a professional SLR camera cannot boast of". If you wrote a different photomobile, I probably wouldn't object.
My experience with SLR cameras is that their autofocus is absolutely impossible to use for video. It's possible that I've missed some amazing news in the DSLR field, but that doesn't mean I'm lying on purpose. Less drama please.
That's because SLRs are not primarily for video, and manual focus is primarily used to focus video. Definitely better than touch focus on the display with a long delay. New SLR models already have high-quality autofocus for video as well. Otherwise, he is the reason why those SLRs are big. It is true that the bigger the chip, the better the photo (unless someone messes up something in the processing), that is given by physics for now.
Even professional dslrs start at 50 thousand (body only). For example, the new canon 7d m2 for about 40 thousand (body) is still a higher amateur class. So I don't see what experience you have. Otherwise, the drama is because these comparisons where the iPhone is the best camera in the world appear here regularly.
Any Sony Alpha. Although it has a pass-through mirror that works differently, it sharpens perfectly. And for shooting with AF, mirrorless are better. But I don't take it as a lie as a colleague.
Mr. Novotný, "automatic focus, which even a professional SLR camera cannot boast of" is a rather misleading turn of phrase.
Firstly – SLR cameras in principle use a dedicated autofocus sensor for focusing, so they do not need "focus pixels" on the primary sensor; secondly - there have been SLR models on the market for more than a year that still have "focus pixels" (due to AF during active live-view). Look up the Canon Dual Pixel CMOS AF website.
Otherwise, many of the observations in the article are good - the practical (non)use of the large display in the Plus in applications is especially interesting. But I suppose it's just a matter of time. Unfortunately, Apple thereby somewhat falls into the fragmented display size criticized in Android. Apps should already support 5 sizes for iPhone and 2 more for iPad…
Or another 4 resolutions for iPad in a moment ;-).
I am excited about the 6plus, personally, I think that the ideal display size is a bit larger, around 6,2 inches (so that the device is able to completely replace a tablet). But I believe that many people don't really like it, and that's why I consider the 6plus from Apple more like an additional product and I secretly hope that Apple will introduce an even bigger brother. As for the camera, I'm excited because as far as I've been able to test, the iPhone shoots much better than my 600D (which is mostly unsuitable lenses for filming). And what applications will be able to do with it! And what about the content of the applications and the usability of the display…. Give the developers time and they will be able to get the most out of the plus.
After all, the phone is not supposed to replace the tablet.
I would like to ask how much free space is there for the 64 GB version and how much for the 128 GB version? Thanks Michael
Well, iOS takes 4-5 GB for each model
The 64 GB version has 52,5 GB of free space after switching on. So -12GB…
with 64gb there is approx 52gb of space left… but that is because apple preinstalled iMovie and iLife there which are to be deleted…
Hello, can I ask if anyone knows when iPhones will be back in stock in Dresden ;)? I would like to go there, but I don't want to travel unnecessarily :)
May I ask how it is with buying an iPhone abroad (e.g. Germany or Austria)? Both physically and by mail. How is a potential complaint handled? There are no additional taxes or duties to be paid from the EU, right?
Correctly. :) You will only have a warranty according to the country where you buy.
If I'm not mistaken, there is a 2-year warranty by law in the entire EU. I was more interested if the phone breaks down, if I have to send it back to e.g. Germany or if I can take it somewhere for warranty repair in the Czech Republic.
Wait until 24.10. and you don't have to solve it ;-).
Great move by Apple with the plus, it's a bit confusing whether to buy an Ipad mini or a plus, but the plus is just great :)
I agree, I will also think about whether having a big phone and an iPad will put the children at risk ;-). But I'll think about whether it can be worn in pockets, or taken with me when running, etc...
