Apple as a company really arouses many emotions and responses from users, critics and independent commentators. Nevertheless, all the above-mentioned groups probably agree on one thing – it is the unique design of all iDevices. Whether we're reviewing an iPhone, iPad, or any computer from Cupertino, the design will be clean and nice. But if we were to focus on the latest iPhone 5 phone, then you will probably agree that not enough is enough and the clean design can only be a memory.

In this article, I'd like to break down the different ways to protect your iPhone and focus on whether you can find a reasonable compromise between protection and maintaining a clean design. The fact that the iPhone 5 is made of aluminum probably doesn't need to be mentioned, but we don't need to throw flint into the rye. There are three alternatives on the market everywhere to choose between protective elements. Case, cover and foil. I personally had the opportunity to test about six covers for a longer period of time and I also tried two types of foils. So I will summarize all the pros and cons in a nutshell.

Case or cover?

A lot could be written about whether this or that is better, but in my opinion, what matters most is what suits someone personally. The undeniable advantage of the case is that the design of the iPhone can be preserved, and yet the phone will not rub off in the backpack/handbag. On the other hand, it must be said that if you take the phone out of the case, the protective bubble is gone. In contrast, the cover always protects the phone - but the design goes by the wayside.

The Pure.Gear case will protect your iPhone during outdoor activities.

The first group of covers are the so-called outdoor covers. These include, for example, brand products Pure.Gear. The advantage is a very durable packaging, rich accessories (including foil) and quality workmanship. What pleases me a little less is the fact that installation and uninstallation takes about two minutes thanks to six threads, not to mention the fact that you can't do without an Allen key. The next cover I got my hands on was a brand product Ballistic. It already uses the phrase HARD CORE on the packaging and it must be said that the packaging looks very durable. It even has a practical case that can be attached to a belt, as well as a two-part construction that can be divided into rubber and plastic to facilitate installation. But what spoils the reputation is the design again. Personally, I don't like that a thin phone turns into a rubber monster. You hardly recognize the iPhone in the case, and in my opinion, such protection is inadequate for normal use. On the other hand, it will help protect your phone in extreme conditions.

Poch covers, I used the case next Gumdrop. This is indeed a very interesting product that combines a rubber but interesting design with a built-in foil. The rubber is wrinkled to help with a comfortable grip. The only thing that bothered me about this cover was the fact that the installation was long and the phone could get scratched during it. But at least the company tried to differentiate the product, so it rubberized the hardware button known as the Home button.

The last two products that passed my testing were two covers that targeted different kinds of customers. It was red elago and black Maccali bumper. Both of them are more for more common customers and I liked them the most. Installation in no time, very thin construction, lower price and pleasant materials - these are all reasons to choose them. The variety of colors is another great attribute that had a pleasant effect on me during the tests. Like the others, they provide a sort of layer of material that protrudes above the display, thus preventing scratches. Elago's product also covers the back of the iPhone, unlike the bumper, i.e. the frame that is placed on the sides of the phone.

As for the bumper, it has become my biggest favorite, I personally use it. It provides the smallest, but still acceptable protection, and at the same time least disturbs the wonderful design of the apple device.

As I promised at the beginning, the point of the article is to say together what the compromise between protection and design is. For me, I can say that I would recommend looking for a cover that will be light, thin and you will like its color. The rubber covers are good, but the phone rattles unnecessarily. The vibration and mute buttons will also be a little harder to control. Therefore, I would rather recommend them for more dangerous sports activities or for a stay in wild nature.

The crux of the problem lies in where the iPhone will be used. For example, if you are moving in an environment of dusty rocks, you probably cannot rely on the bumper. But if you are in the midst of a "big city", then I would dare to show the world the charm of the iPhone in a stylish and thin cover made of quality materials.

And at the end we are left with foils. It is not possible to say any generally valid principle for all users. But for me, if I decide for it, the most important thing is a perfect installation. It is the basis of. After that, I can look forward to an image without light reflections. But if you're worried about scratches and scuffs, as a long-term iPhone user I can say that today's technology is so far that if you don't carry your keys in your pocket, the screen shouldn't get scratched even after a long time.
