We are learning more and more about the upcoming iPhones, with the more advanced variant with the Pro moniker clearly leading the way. After all, we already practically know what the iPhone 15 Pro will look like, what will be the frame, the materials used, etc. The current report then says that it should get rid of the hardware volume switch, and we think that's a good thing.

The volume rocker located on the left side of the iPhone above the volume buttons has been with us since the very beginning, when the iPhone 2G came with it. So every generation had it, including such exceptions as the iPhone 5C, XR or the entire SE series. iPads also got it, but it can also perform the function of locking the rotation of the display. According to the current speculation published by the website MacRumors, the upcoming iPhone 15 Pro generation will lose this hardware element.

Of course, speculation is still speculation until it's officially announced, but this one comes from the same person who predicted the arrival of Dynamic Island, which of course he was right about. This statement therefore has some weight. This specifically mentions that the iPhone 15 Pro would get rid of the volume switch and instead get an action button that we know from, for example, the Apple Watch Ultra.

What will the button do?

As for the Apple Watch Ultra, their action button can start, for example, exercise, stopwatch, shortcuts, flashlight, diving and more. If we were to talk about what could trigger such a button on the iPhone, there is of course a lot of it, and it would certainly be nice if Apple did not limit us only with its choices. If we look at the Android platform, with Samsung Galaxy phones, for example, you can double-press the power button to launch the Camera application, which is very addictive.

Here, it would be enough for you to press the button once, and except for the camera, activate, for example, the flashlight, low power mode, screen recording, VoiceOver, magnifier, background sounds, take a recording or screenshot, etc. However, it is true that you can activate most of these functions as well by triple-tapping the back of the device, which you activate in the option Settings -> Disclosure -> Touch -> Tap on the back.

We don't really need the volume switch anymore

The hardware volume rocker button was one of the few things Android phones never copied from the iPhone, even though users clamored for it. This was a practical feature, as you can feel the switch even blindly, for example with your phone in your pocket. This way, you can turn off its ringtone anytime, anywhere, without having to look at the display, which is truly discreet.

But this function has lost its meaning, at least for most iPhone users. Of course, the Apple Watch and smart watches in general are to blame. Notifications have moved mainly to them, and most owners of iPhones and smartwatches turn off their phone ringtones hard, because it makes no sense for them to have every notification vibrate on their wrist.

The button loses its meaning also because of automations, such as sleep and convenience modes, which can automatically schedule the ringtone to be muted, so you don't need the button again. So it is relatively time to really say goodbye to it and make room for more practical functions.
