Only recently, the new iPhone 14 (Pro) series was introduced to the world, and already there is talk of a successor. As usual, various leaks and speculations are starting to spread among apple growers, which show some of the expected changes that we can look forward to. Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the most respected analysts, has now come up with quite interesting news, according to which the iPhone 15 Pro will come with a number of quite interesting changes.

According to available reports, Apple is going to redesign the physical buttons. Specifically, the button for switching on and changing the volume will see changes, which apparently should no longer be mechanical, as was the case with all iPhones until now. On the contrary, quite an interesting change is coming. Newly, they will be firm and static, while they will only imitate the feeling of being pressed. Although at first glance something like this might seem like a step backwards, it's actually great news that could take the iPhone a step forward.

Mechanical or fixed buttons?

First of all, let's mention why Apple wants to change the current buttons at all. As we mentioned above, they have been with us practically since the very beginning and they work without the slightest difficulty. But they have one rather fundamental shortcoming. As they are mechanical buttons, they lose quality over time and are subject to wear and material fatigue. This is why problems can appear after years of use. On the other hand, only a minimal percentage of users will encounter something like this. Apple is therefore planning a change. As we mentioned above, the new buttons should be solid and immovable, while they will only simulate a press.

iPhone

This is nothing new for Apple. He already boasted about the same change in 2016, when the iPhone 7 was introduced. This model was the first to switch from the traditional mechanical home button to a fixed one, which also only imitates the press via the Taptic Engine vibration motor. The extremely popular Trackpad from Apple works on the same principle. Although the Force Touch technology may seem like it can actually be pressed in two levels, the truth is different. Even in this case, the compression is only simulated. It is for this reason that the home button of the iPhone 7 (or later) or the trackpad cannot be pressed when the devices are turned off.

High time for a change

From this it clearly follows that the implementation of this change is definitely desirable. In this way, Apple would be able to raise the feedback from a simple press several levels further and thus give the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) an additional feeling of premiumness, which results from the use of fixed buttons imitating a press. On the other hand, it won't just be about changing the buttons as such. To ensure the best possible results, Apple must deploy another Taptic Engine. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, two more should be added. However, the Taptic Engine as a separate component occupies a valuable place in the bowels of the device. It is this fact that makes it doubtful that the giant would resort to this change in the final.

Taptic Engine

In addition, we are still almost a year away from the introduction of the new series. We should therefore take current news with a little more caution. On the other hand, this does not change the fact that the change from mechanical buttons to fixed ones in combination with the Taptic Engine would definitely be worth it, as it would bring significantly more lively and reliable feedback for the user. At the same time, it is certainly worth noting that a similar change was considered years ago in the case of the Apple Watch, which should have benefited from better water resistance. Although there was no need to deploy an additional Taptic Engine for the watch, we did not see the transition to fixed buttons anyway. They also protect the sides and buttons. Would you welcome such a change, or do you think it is pointless to deploy another Taptic Engine and change mechanical buttons?
