In February, Samsung introduced a trio of new smartphones in the top line of the Galaxy S series portfolio. Although the Galaxy S22 Ultra is the most equipped model, the camera specifications of the iPhone 13 Pro (Max) are closer to the middle with the nickname Plus. Here you will find a comparison of the zoom range of both these devices.

Both have three lenses, both are divided into wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto. However, their specifications differ, of course, especially in terms of MPx and aperture. If we then look at the scaling of the zoom, the Galaxy S22+ offers 0,6, 1 and 3x zoom, the iPhone 13 Pro Max then 0,5, 1 and 3x zoom. However, the first leads in digital zoom, when it reaches up to thirty times, the iPhone provides a maximum of 15x digital zoom. But as you can probably guess, such a result is not good from either device.

Camera specifications:

Galaxy S22+

  • Ultra wide camera: 12 MPx, f/2,2, angle of view 120˚
  • Wide angle camera: 50 MPx, OIS, f/1,8
  • Telephoto lens: 10 MPx, 3x optical zoom, OIS, f/2,4
  • Front camera: 10MP, f/2,2

iPhone 13 Pro Max

  • Ultra wide camera: 12 MPx, f/1,8, angle of view 120˚
  • Wide angle camera: 12 MPx, OIS with sensor shift, f/1,5
  • Telephoto lens: 12 MPx, 3x optical zoom, OIS, f/2,8
  • LiDAR scanner
  • Front camera: 12MP, f/2,2

The first photo is always taken with an ultra-wide-angle camera, followed by a wide-angle, telephoto lens, and the fourth photo is the maximum digital zoom (just for illustration, because of course such photos are not usable). The present photos are reduced for the needs of the website, but are without any additional editing. You can watch them in full resolution view here.

Neither phone has much to fault. Due to its higher aperture, the telephoto lens has a slight problem in dark areas, where it simply washes out the colors and thus the details that are present are lost, although the Galaxy S22+ is slightly better at this thanks to its aperture. You can see a slightly different rendering of the colors here, but which result is more pleasing is a purely subjective impression.

In both cases, photos were taken using native camera applications, with automatic HDR turned on. According to the metadata, the resulting photos from the Galaxy S22+ are 4000 × 3000 pixels in the case of the telephoto lens, and 13 × 4032 pixels in the case of the iPhone 3024 Pro Max. The first mentioned has a focal length of 7 mm, the second 9 mm.
