The iPhone has become an incredibly powerful device over the past fourteen years. If you pick up its first generation today, you'll be surprised at how slow it actually is. At the same time, it was a top-of-the-line device. And even though comparing the speed of the original iPhone with the iPhone 12 may seem inappropriate, Apple itself likes to state the technological progress of its innovations compared to the first generations.

He did so relatively recently when he introduced the iPad Pro. For him, the company did not forget to mention that its new M1 chip offers 75x faster "processor" performance and 1x higher graphics performance compared to the first iPad. Is this useful information? Definitely not. But it sounds really impressive. This is also why the YouTube channel PhoneBuff decided to compare the original iPhone with the current iPhone 500.

Two different worlds

The Apple iPhone 12 offers an A14 Bionic chip with a 6-core processor with a speed of 3,1 GHz, compared to it, the first iPhone contained only a 1-core CPU with a clock frequency of 412 MHz. RAM memory is 4 GB vs. 128 MB and a display resolution of 320 × 480 pixels vs. 2532 × 1170. The first iPhone had discontinued support for the operating system in version iOS 3.1.3, the current iPhone 12 model runs on iOS 14.6. The difference between the two devices is 13 years.

As PhoneBuff noted, running a speed test between iPhones with such a large age gap was quite tricky. Of course, the first generation cannot run new applications that would otherwise normally be part of the comparison. So they had to select the basic operating system applications common to both, i.e. Camera, Photos, Calculator, Notes, Safari and App Store.

Therefore, the test cannot completely objectively compare the performance of both devices, however, the result showed that the iPhone 12 managed all tasks in one minute. The first iPhone took 2 minutes and 29 seconds. PhoneBuff also reports that they had to slow down his bot considerably to match the speed of the first iPhone's system.

A whiff of nostalgia

Since I own the first iPhone, I sometimes turn it on and look at its operating system and options. And even if it's more a question of great patience, I always feel a sense of nostalgia for the days when Apple wasn't where it is now. However, in order to be able to use the first iPhone in our country, it had to be jailbroken, which later made it a bit of a pain, because in connection with the unofficial system, it is even slower. Even so, a trip to history is nice.

However, in the "old" days, even Apple was not completely successful in debugging operating systems for older devices. He especially paid for it with the iPhone 3G, which was almost unusable with a later update. It was so slow that you just didn't have the nerve to use it. Now we already know the form of the iOS 15 system, which will be available even on the old iPhone 6S. If, however, there is a slight slowdown of the system, it will still be acceptable due to the age of the device, which was already introduced in 2015.
