We've been hearing more and more about the return of Touch ID to iPhones lately. Apple should switch from the original capacitive fingerprint sensor to an ultrasonic one, which it integrates into the phone's display. According to the latest news from Economic Daily News could the Californian company offer Touch ID in the display as early as next year, with the forthcoming iPhone 12.

Apple representatives are to visit the Taiwanese display manufacturer GIS next week and discuss with him the possibilities of implementing an ultrasonic sensor under the display. If all goes according to plan, then GIS should already install displays with a fingerprint sensor in the iPhones that Apple plans for next year. However, Economic Daily News points out that due to the complexity of the entire process, development may be delayed until 2021.

The interesting thing is that Apple is not developing its own solution, but will use an ultrasonic sensor from Qualcomm, which will supply the necessary components directly to GIS. For example, Samsung also uses technology from Qualcomm in its Galaxy S10 and Note10 phones. However, the security of the sensors is not yet at a high level and can be bypassed quite easily - Samsung recently solved a problem where users were able to confuse the sensor by sticking tempered glass on the phone's display.

However, Apple is said to use the latest generation of ultrasonic sensor that Qualcomm introduced this week at the Snapdragon Tech Summit. It not only offers a higher level of security, but above all it captures an area 17 times larger (specifically 30 x 20 mm) than the sensor in the Galaxy S10. Despite this, Apple reportedly plans to offer Touch ID at such a level that it can capture a fingerprint across the entire surface of the display - this technology is even patented.

Although the integration of Touch ID into the iPhone display may seem unnecessary to some and the related speculation unlikely, everything points to the exact opposite. Apart from the Economic Daily News, analysts from Barclays also claim Ming-Chi Kuo and even Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, that Apple is developing an in-display fingerprint sensor for upcoming iPhones. Touch ID should serve as a secondary authentication method alongside Face ID in Apple phones.
