The iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max are the first ever models with which Apple bundles a stronger adapter for fast charging. Just half an hour is enough to charge the battery to more than 50%. However, the phones also support wireless charging, but in this regard the speeds are extremely slow, even significantly slower than last year's iPhone XS.

Like its predecessors, the iPhone 11 Pro also supports wireless charging with a power of up to 7,5W. Although it was possible due to the higher battery capacity – 3046 mAh (iPhone 11 Pro) vs. 2658 mAh (Phone XS) – assuming that the novelty will charge wirelessly a little slower, the difference in the result is significant. While the iPhone XS can be recharged wirelessly in 3,5 hours, the iPhone 11 Pro can be recharged in up to 5 hours.

For testing purposes, we used the wireless charger Mophie Wireless Charging Base, which was also sold by Apple itself and which has the necessary certification and offers a power of 7,5 W. We performed the measurements several times and always came to the same result. While searching for possible reasons, we found out that the same problem is reported by foreign media, such as a magazine Phone Arena.

iPhone 11 Pro wireless charging:

  • after 0,5 hours to 18%
  • after 1 hours to 32%
  • after 1,5 hours to 44%
  • after 2 hours to 56%
  • after 2,5 hours to 67%
  • after 3 hours 76%
  • after 3,5 hours 85%
  • after 4 hours to 91%
  • after 4,5 hours to 96%
  • after 5 hours to 100%

iPhone XS wireless charging

  • after 0,5 hours to 22%
  • after 1 hours to 40%
  • after 1,5 hours to 56%
  • after 2 hours to 71%
  • after 2,5 hours to 85%
  • After 3 hours at 97%
  • After 3,5 hours at 100%

We performed the tests on both phones under the same conditions – shortly after buying the phone (new battery), with the battery charged to 1%, flight mode and low power mode on, all applications closed.

Moreover, according to recent news in iOS 13.1, Apple began to limit some wireless chargers and software reduces their power from 7,5 W to 5 W. However, the aforementioned limitation did not affect our test for two reasons. First of all, it does not apply to pads from Mophie, and secondly, we carried out the tests on iOS 13.0.

So the bottom line is simple – if you need to charge your iPhone 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max quickly, avoid wireless charging. Why the speeds are significantly lower than last year's models remains a question for now. However, slower charging also has the advantage that the battery is less stressed during the process and thus extends its life.
