Most of us associate the DxOMark server with detailed testing of photographic technology, including modern smartphones. Dx0Mark's wide array of tests allows you to get a fairly clear idea of how good a camera in today's smartphones is compared to the competition. The server is now expanding its services and is also tapping into the audio segment. And according to the first results, it seems that Apple is not doing as well with the news as one might expect.

The Dx0Mark Audio section was launched together with reviews of seven products that tested the quality of the playback sound as well as the quality of the microphones. According to the authors of the website, the focus on these functions is the logical outcome of the effort to comprehensively evaluate modern phones. The display and camera tests are completely normal. However, since the acquisition and consumption of audiovisual content is becoming more and more widespread through smartphones, testing these parameters is absolutely appropriate.

As part of the testing, the authors will focus on five criteria according to which they will evaluate individual smartphones. These are basic sound parameters (frequency range, equalization, volume, etc.), dynamics, spatiality, loudness (in the sense of the power of sound production) and the presence of various artifacts that spoil listening or recording.

The results will be evaluated both on the basis of subjective evaluations of individual testers and on the basis of empirically measured values. Despite the human factor of testing, the results should be relatively objective and serious.

As part of the first test matrix, the Huawei Mate 20 X, iPhone XS Max, iPhone 11 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, Samsung Galaxy S10+, Honor 20 Pro and Sony Xperia 1 models were compared. In the comprehensive evaluation, the Huawei Mate is in first place 20 X, followed by last year's iPhone XS Max with a point worse result. This year's iPhone 11 Pro is a distant third, you can view the rest of the ranking in the images in the gallery.

The current leader of the ranking owes its position to a pair of stereo microphones that can record an almost perfect audio recording. However, last year's iPhone is not that much worse. On the contrary, this year's model is no glory. You can find more information about the testing, methodology and evaluation in the attached video.
