The release of this volume will be a bit unconventional compared to others. I will not focus on the first grade curriculum, nor on specific applications. In this piece, I will briefly introduce you to the SAMR model, the author of which is Ruben R. Puentedura. We will talk about the SAMR model, or the necessary steps for the well-thought-out introduction of iPads and other technologies not only in education.

What is the SAMR model and its use in practice

The name SAMR model is composed of 4 words:

  • SUBSTITUTION
  • AUGMENTATION
  • MODIFICATION
  • REDEFINITION (complete change)

It is about how we can thoughtfully include ICT (iPads) in teaching.

In the 1st phase (S), ICT only replaces standard learning methods (book, paper and pencil,...). There are no other goals in it. Instead of writing in a notebook, children write, for example, on a tablet or laptop. Instead of reading a classic book, they read a digital book, etc.

In the 2nd phase (A), the possibilities that the given device enables and offers are already being used. Video, links, interactive test, etc. can be added to the digital book.

The 3rd phase (M) already focuses on other teaching goals, which we can fulfill precisely thanks to ICT technologies. Pupils create their own learning materials because they can find and process information themselves.

In the 4th phase (R), we are already making full use of the possibilities of ICT, thanks to which we can focus on completely new goals. Not only do children create their own learning materials, but they can share them, access them anytime, anywhere, XNUMX hours a day.

I will give one specific example, when we reflected on the 1st semester with the third grade at primary school.

  1. I let the kids go videa, where the important moments of the first half of the year are captured.
  2. In doing so, the children described how they felt about it, what they studied and learned.
  3. They created a simple overview of the subject they should master.
  4. They helped each other with textbooks, class websites.
  5. The children shared the presentation with me.
  6. I created a single one from the shared presentations.
  7. I put it on the class website.
  8. He added links to subjects that could cause them problems.

Technology (which, of course, we have been using for a long time and safely controlled) suddenly allowed us to create material that is accessible to children anytime, anywhere, complete with links to the subject matter they should master.
