Apple has iPads, Samsung has Galaxy Tabs. Both companies then offer several product lines that differ from each other in terms of size and equipment. Apple's top portfolio is the Pro series, while Samsung's is the Galaxy Tab S.

Apple offers its iPad Pro in two sizes. Specifically, in 11 and 12,9" diagonals of their displays. Samsung's top line is currently the Galaxy Tab S8, which includes three models. The basic Galaxy Tab S8 has an 11" diagonal, the Galaxy Tab S8+ 12,4" and the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra a really generous 14,6" diagonal of its display, when the company made it such thin frames that it had to front camera assembly, because there are two , place in the viewport.

The Galaxy Tab S8 and Galaxy Tab S8+ models practically only differ in the size of their display and slightly in their technology, and thus in overall dimensions as well as in the size of their batteries (8, 000 and 10 mAh). Otherwise, these are identical models, with the only difference being that the smaller model has a fingerprint reader in the side button, while the Plus (and Ultra) model already has it on the display. In contrast to Apple's portfolio, it could be clearly said that the smaller model is a direct competitor to the 0900" iPad Pro, while the Plus model could compete with the 11" iPad Pro in terms of size, when the Ultra would have its own category.

But if we focus on the most equipped tablets, there is a clear intention of Samsung to bring something more, with which it would differentiate itself from Apple and perhaps even overtake it. However, it tries to keep up with its main competitor in terms of price.

Basic prices

  • 11" Galaxy Tab S8: 19 CZK Wi-Fi, 490 CZK 22G
  • 12,4" Galaxy Tab S8+: 24 CZK Wi-Fi, 490 CZK 27G
  • 14,6" Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra: 29 CZK Wi-Fi, 990 CZK 33G
  • 11" iPad Pro: 22 CZK Wi-Fi, 990 CZK Cellular
  • 12,9" iPad Pro: 30 CZK Wi-Fi, 990 CZK Cellular

It is important to mention, however, that all versions start at 128GB of internal storage, while the Samsung package also includes an S Pen, Apple Pencil 2nd generation costs CZK 3 at Apple. However, you will find a 490W USB-C power adapter in the packaging of the iPads, which you must buy in addition to the Samsungs.

Performance: M1 vs Snapdragon

Of course, the iPad Pro excels in its performance because it is equipped with the "adult" M1 chip, which Apple first used in its Macs, when it was the first chip for personal computers made with 5nm technology. In contrast, the Galaxy Tab S8 is equipped with Qualcomm's most powerful mobile chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which is already manufactured using 4nm technology. In the field of Android devices, there is practically nothing better, so in both cases it is a technological peak.

Display : mini-LED against Super AMOLED

The 11" iPad has a Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2388 x 1668 at 264 pixels per inch and adaptive refresh rate technology. However, the higher model is equipped with a display with a mini-LED backlight, i.e. a 2D backlight system with 2 local dimming zones. Its resolution is 596 × 2732 at 2048 ppi. It may be surpassed by competing models (due to the different aspect ratio, it's a point of view), but not so much in the technology used.

  • 11" Galaxy Tab S8: 2560 x 1600, (WQXGA), 276 ppi LTPS TFT, up to 120 Hz
  • 12,4" Galaxy Tab S8+: 2800 x 1752 (WQXGA+), 266 ppi Super AMOLED, up to 120 Hz
  • 14,6" Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra: 2960 x 1848 (WQXGA+), 240 ppi Super AMOLED, up to 120 Hz

Cameras: Centering the shot against automatic framing

iPad Pros have the same system of wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle cameras, where the wide-angle is 12MPx sf/1,8 and the ultra-wide is 10MPx sf/2,4 and a 125° field of view. All three Samsungs have a 13MP wide-angle and a 6MPx ultra-wide camera, sf/2,0 and f/2,2, respectively. Not one of them lacks an LED, the iPad Pro also has a LiDAR scanner.

The front 12 MPx camera of the iPad sf/2,4 is capable of Face ID and centering the shot. To the latter, the Ultra model offers an alternative in the form of an automatic framing function, which is why it is equipped with a pair of 12MPx cameras (f/2,2 for wide-angle and f/2,4 for ultra-wide-angle). Standard models lack the ultra-wide angle.

Just the current peak

Even though in the case of Apple these are last year's models, they are the top in the field of iPads and tablets in general. As for Samsung's solutions, you'll be hard-pressed to find better Android tablets. It is quite logical that owners of Apple devices will prefer its solution, while others prefer to reach for the Samsung one.

In any case, it is quite positive to see that Samsung is trying to expand its portfolio and has the courage to bring, for example, a notch in the display to the tablet segment. Thanks to its close cooperation with Microsoft, its products also have an interesting connection with Windows. The DeX interface, which tries to act like a desktop, may also appeal to someone. On the other hand, it is increasingly common to hear the opinion that Apple should bring its iPadOS closer to the macOS system, because the operating system is what is holding its iPads back.
