The iPad took a big hit today. Swedish journalists from the Slashat.se server wrote an email to Steve Jobs and asked if the Wi-Fi version of the iPad would support tethering via the iPhone. Steve Jobs' answer was short and clear: "No".
Apple users hate the plan so much that they would have a data plan only on the iPhone, which they would then share to the iPad via tethering. Unfortunately, Apple is spoiling our plans with this. If you want to be on the Internet and not depend only on Wifi, you will have to buy a 3G model and buy an additional data plan from the operator.
bnderkiller: How is JB? Is it problem-free now, or after JB do I still have to buy an app to get push working again?
iPad Wi-Fi without tethering via iPhone: So I'll have to wait for the 3G version... Sakrys and I were so excited :-D
That's right again like a leg. I don't quite understand how anyone could expect something like that. As naive as the writers of this server.
Yes, how could anyone expect that when sharing the Internet from an iPhone to a laptop, that it could go to an iPad "tablet", which will be less demanding on data... :D
I should have waited. And why? Not because I'm naive, but because it seemed normal to me. The question is whether Apple will end up going against itself with this step, because the non-3G versions of the iPad won't sell as much.
Everyone who is at least somewhat normal expects from a mobile device, equipped with the possibility of wireless communication (whether it is Wi-Fi or Bluetooth), that this device will be able to connect to something that will further expand its connectivity...
A tablet 'only at home' or in a wi-fi enabled Internet cafe is useful to me and denies what it was originally created for...
For me personally, a rather important shortcoming – paying 2 data tariffs does not seem very OK to me. Well, I hope to jailbreak…
I think it's clear and no one expected it to be possible! Apple would go against itself and the operators. And of course, it's just a modified iPhoneOS, so it was obvious that this feature wasn't coming. Anyone familiar with Apple's policy would have guessed. Quite an obvious step, but it can be done. Just have an iPhone JB and use the MyFi application to create Wi-Fi tethering and connect to this Wi-Fi with an iPad.
Hm, iProxy solves it even without JB :)
