The presentation of the new iOS 17 operating system is literally around the corner. Apple has already officially revealed the date of the developer conference WWDC 2023, during which new apple systems are revealed every year. The already mentioned iOS naturally attracts the most attention. It is therefore not surprising that now one speculation after another is running through the apple growing community, describing possible changes and news.

As it can be seen from the available leaks, iOS 17 is supposed to bring a number of long-awaited changes and innovations. Therefore, improvements to the application library, the possibility of a complete redesign of the control center and many others are mentioned most often. However, in the current enthusiasm and discussion of possible novelties, which most often relate to the user interface and overall design, it is easy to forget about other literally necessary functions that are still missing in the system. The storage management system, which needs an overhaul more than ever, deserves a major step forward.

Poor state of storage management system

The current state of the repository management system is a frequent subject of criticism by apple users. The truth is that it is literally in a miserable condition. In addition, according to some users, it is not even possible to talk about any system at the moment - the capabilities definitely do not correspond to it. At the same time, storage requirements are growing year after year, which is why it is literally the highest time to act. If you open it now on your iPhone Settings > General > Storage: iPhone, you will see the status of storage usage, a suggestion for putting away unused ones and a subsequent list of individual apps, sorted from the largest to the smallest. When you click on a program, you will see the size of the application as such and subsequently also the space that is occupied purely by documents and data. As far as options are concerned, the app can at most be postponed or deleted entirely.

This practically ends the possibilities of the current system. At first glance, it is obvious that a number of extremely important options are missing here, which complicates the overall storage management, which Apple could significantly simplify. In my particular case, for example, Spark, an email client, takes up 2,33 GB in total. However, only 301,9 MB is occupied by applications, while the rest consists of data in the form of emails themselves, and especially their attachments. What if I want to delete attachments and free up 2 GB of data on my iPhone? Then I have no choice but to reinstall the app. So it is definitely not a very clever solution. If you run out of storage on your phone, Apple comes up with an interesting feature that should be your salvation at first glance - it's the option to postpone the application. However, this will only delete the app as such, while the data will remain on the storage. So let's summarize it briefly.

What changes does the storage management system need:

  • Option to delete cache
  • Option to delete saved documents and data
  • Overhaul of the "Snooze App" feature

As we mentioned a little above, as a solution, Apple introduced the option to postpone applications. It can also be activated so that it works automatically. The system then automatically postpones unused applications, but it does not inform you about this in any way. It is therefore not unusual that at one point you need to launch a specific application, but instead of opening it, it just starts downloading. In addition, as the law of consent preaches, it happens best in an environment where you don't even have a signal. Therefore, it would definitely not hurt if the apple company instead of "unnecessary" cosmetic changes brought a fundamental shift in that storage management system. It is no secret that this is a weak point of the iOS and iPadOS operating system.
