The iOS operating system is getting better every year. Every year, Apple releases new versions of its operating systems, which respond to current trends and regularly bring a variety of innovations. For example, with the current version of iOS 16, we saw a completely redesigned lock screen, better focus modes, changes in the native applications Photos, Messages, Mail or Safari and a number of other changes. The best part is that the new features can be enjoyed by the vast majority. Apple is known for long-term software support. Thanks to this, you can install iOS 16 on, for example, the iPhone 8 (Plus) from 2017.

Great news also came along with the iOS 14 operating system. With it, Apple finally listened to the pleas of apple lovers and brought widgets in a usable form - they could finally be placed on the desktop itself. Previously, widgets could only be placed on the side screen, which made them completely unused in the vast majority of cases. Fortunately, that has changed. At the same time, iOS 14 brought a revolutionary change for some. Although it is a relatively closed system, Apple has allowed Apple users to change their default browser and email client. Since then, we are no longer dependent on Safari and Mail, but on the contrary, we can replace them with alternatives that are friendlier to us. Unfortunately, Apple forgot something in this regard and is still paying for it.

The default navigation software has a number of shortcomings

What unfortunately cannot be changed is the default navigation software. Of course, we are talking about the native Apple Maps application, which has been facing a lot of criticism for years, especially from the users themselves. After all, this is a generally known fact. Apple maps simply do not catch up with the competition and, on the contrary, hide in the shadow of Google Maps, or Mapy.cz. Although the Cupertino giant tries to constantly work on the software, it is still not able to offer the kind of quality we are used to from the mentioned alternatives.

In addition, the overall problem is exacerbated in our particular case. As we mentioned above, Apple tries to constantly work on the Apple Maps application and improve it, but there is a rather fundamental but. In the overwhelming majority of cases, the news only concerns Apple's homeland, namely the United States of America, while Europe is more or less forgotten. On the contrary, such a Google invests considerable sums in its Google Maps application and constantly scans virtually the entire world. A huge advantage is also up-to-date information about various problems or the traffic situation, which can come in handy during a long car ride. When using Apple Maps, it may not be so unusual that the navigation guides you, for example, to a section that is currently impassable.

That's why it would make sense if Apple allowed its users to change the default navigation app. In the end, he decided to make the same change in the aforementioned browser and e-mail client. But it is a question of whether we will ever see this change, or when. Currently, there is no further information about the possibility of this news, and its early arrival is therefore rather unlikely. At the same time, the latest operating system iOS 16 is relatively recently available. This means that we will have to wait until June 17 (at the developer conference WWDC) for the introduction of iOS 2023 and for the subsequent release to the public until September 2023. Would you like to be able to change the default navigation app?
