Newzoo's "The International Gamers Survey 2010" proved what many gaming fans had suspected. iOS has become one of the most used gaming platforms. It thus surpassed many competitors such as Sony PSP, LG, Blackberry.

Among other things, the survey revealed that there are 77 million people in the United States who play games on mobile phones or other portable devices. Of the total number of players, 40,1 million belong to the iOS operating system, or to users who use an iPhone, iPod touch or iPad as a gaming platform. The only platform to gain a bigger share than iOS is the Nintendo DS/DSi with a total of 41 million, a very tight margin. 18 million gamers use Sony PSP. 15,6 million users play on LG phones and 12,8 million on Blackberry.

In terms of willingness to spend money on games, Nintendo devices (67%) and PSP (66%) lead the way. It's even worse for iOS devices, namely 45% of users buy games on iPod touch/iPhone and 32% on iPad. This just proves that there are still a large number of users using cracked games and apps, unfortunately they also outnumber users who get the games and apps legally.

Overall, PSP or DS owners are more used to buying games. On average, 53% percent of DS/DSi owners and 59% of PSP users spend more than $10 per month on games. If we compare it with iOS, the results are as follows. 38% of iPhone/iPod touch users spend more than $10 per month, and even 72% of iPad owners. The iPad achieves the highest percentage in this category.

But if we look at this problem from a general point of view, $10 is really not a dizzying amount, and I believe that there are a large number of iOS device owners in the Czech Republic who belong to the "we spend over $10 a month on games" group. So I definitely belong among them.

Furthermore, it has been shown that Americans who play computer games also use other platforms at the same time. Almost 14 million of the total number of Nintendo DS/DSi owners (which is 34%) use iPod touch. Also, almost 90% of iPad owners also own an iPhone or the aforementioned iPod touch.

As the survey has already shown, Nintendo has the largest player base. However, Nintendo has a much stronger position in Europe than in the United States. The following data are for comparison:

  • UK - 8 million iOS players, 13 million DS/DSi, 4,5 million PSP.
  • Germany - 7 million iOS players, 10 million DS/DSi, 2,5 million PSP.
  • France - 5,5 million iOS players, 12,5 million DS/DSi, 4 million PSP.
  • Netherlands - 0,8 million iOS players, 2,8 million DS/DSi, 0,6 million PSP.

The survey shows the strength and continued growth of the iOS operating system as a gaming platform. In addition, this phenomenon is supported by the huge number of available applications and games in the App Store. Already today we can witness remakes of computer games on iOS devices, these games will surely increase thanks to the constant improvement of the hardware of iOS devices. So I believe we will always have something to look forward to.
