Yesterday, Apple released the first beta version of the minor iOS 8.1.1 operating system update. Although it's the hundredth update that mostly only brings minor improvements and bug fixes, version 8.1.1 fixes some major bugs and what's more, it brings performance improvements on older devices that saw a significant drop in system speed after installing iOS 8.
According to Apple, the upgrade applies to the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, both of which share the same A5 chipset and are the earliest devices compatible with iOS 8. In the list, Apple does not mention the original iPad mini, which has a slightly improved 32nm version of the A5, but we can hope that the speedup this tablet will also see it, after all, Apple still has it in the current offer despite the three-year-old hardware. Apple is no stranger to performance improvements for older devices after the release of a major version, it already did so in the case of iOS 4.1 for the iPhone 3G, although despite the improvements the phone was still very slow.
iOS 8.1.1 also fixes a bug where the system could not remember the order of apps in the sharing window. In iOS 8, it is possible to set the order of supported extensions in each application, or to disable some, unfortunately this setting was always restored after some time and the order thus returned to the original setting. Some users also complained about an issue with iCloud that prevented them from running apps that used it for syncing. iOS 8.1.1 also fixes this issue.
On the contrary. Of course, the iPad mini also has an a5 chip. Not a5x
Thanks for the warning. She was just a 32nm revision of the A5.
Strangely enough, at least on my devices, I noticed a noticeable difference in iOS 8 speed compared to the iPad Mini (1st gen) and the iPad 2. I don't know what that is. Maybe that "mere" revision also brought some minor improvements that are now visible here. What is your experience?
I don't know, I have 5s, but I'll still be a lot slower even with such a shock as the sleep alarm .. well, we'll see what it does :)
starting the control center from the menu does not work for me after 8.1
Can anyone help? I have the same problem on iohone 6…
On my 4S, I often have problems with pulling the notification center roll down from top to bottom and, conversely, with quick access (I don't know what it's called) when the screen is unlocked, i.e. on the iPhone's main screen. After power off/on or reset it works again for a while.
Occasional lags and reactions... If things don't improve, I think Apple should offer an official downgrade to iOS7. Otherwise, calling through the Yosemite area is pleasant
Well, children get angry with Minecraft on Ipad2 because it cuts too fast....
I wanted to download beta version 8.1.1 to iPad2, but it tells me that I have 8.1, the most current version, so I don't know what to do with it...
You cannot install iOS 8.1.1 beta if you do not have a Developer account.
The error with the order of supported extensions bothers me enough. Thanks to it, 1Password is always in last place. Let it be outside.
Thank you for the information! I have an Iphone 4S and I'm on iOS 8.1. quite desperate. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to downgrade to 7.1.2. as long as I could and I was thinking of throwing my phone away and buying something from Samsung... and I hate Apple
After updating to 8.1.1, I just have a problem connecting to my home wifi.. when it does connect, it's very unstable and slow (ipad mini retina)
