Yesterday, Apple released the first beta version of the minor iOS 8.1.1 operating system update. Although it's the hundredth update that mostly only brings minor improvements and bug fixes, version 8.1.1 fixes some major bugs and what's more, it brings performance improvements on older devices that saw a significant drop in system speed after installing iOS 8.

According to Apple, the upgrade applies to the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, both of which share the same A5 chipset and are the earliest devices compatible with iOS 8. In the list, Apple does not mention the original iPad mini, which has a slightly improved 32nm version of the A5, but we can hope that the speedup this tablet will also see it, after all, Apple still has it in the current offer despite the three-year-old hardware. Apple is no stranger to performance improvements for older devices after the release of a major version, it already did so in the case of iOS 4.1 for the iPhone 3G, although despite the improvements the phone was still very slow.

iOS 8.1.1 also fixes a bug where the system could not remember the order of apps in the sharing window. In iOS 8, it is possible to set the order of supported extensions in each application, or to disable some, unfortunately this setting was always restored after some time and the order thus returned to the original setting. Some users also complained about an issue with iCloud that prevented them from running apps that used it for syncing. iOS 8.1.1 also fixes this issue.
