I often hear the opinion that the Czech user community is more or less insignificant for Apple. I often have to agree, but recent actions by the company indicate that the situation is improving considerably. At the beginning of the year, we received official support for Apple Pay, later Tim Cook promised that he would deal with the issue of building an Apple Store in Prague, and finally, since the middle of last month, we have been able to measure the ECG on the Apple Watch Series 4. Now comes another important news - Czech spelling check in iOS 13, iPad OS 13 and macOS Catalina.

Although Apple tries hard to present the iPad as a replacement for the Mac, it forgets some specific functions that are crucial even for the basic user. One of them is clearly the control of the written text, which has been missing in the case of the Czech language until now. The new systems iOS 13, iPad OS 13 and macOS Catalina, which will be available to regular users in September, solve the mentioned absence and bring Czech spelling control.

If you make a mistake or typo on your iPhone or iPad, the system will alert you to the fact that something is wrong in the text by holding down the word in red. If you double-click on a given word, you will see alternatives that can be used to replace the word. However, the system isn't always smart enough to suggest the word in the form you intended to write - for example, for the word "slaps", iOS 13 only suggests "slaps" and "slaps", but not the originally intended "slaps".

Essentially the same system also applies to the new macOS 10.15, where alternatives are displayed when you click behind a given word. However, it was possible to check Czech spelling on Mac with the help of applications such as Dictionaries, or after adding the Czech dictionary to the relevant folder in the system.

Apple convinced the petition

Probably few would believe that the addition of Czech spelling check to the new systems is behind a recent petition on change.org, whose initiator was Roman Maštalíř. Although the petition received only 917 signatures out of the originally planned 10, one of the Czechs working at Apple noticed it and forwarded it to the right place. According to information In the end, Apple decided to implement the function in the systems at the last minute.
