iOS 12 has been around for quite some time now. But after its latest update, reports began to appear from users who noticed repeated problems with charging, both classically via a Lightning cable and via a wireless charging pad.

More than a hundred users are currently discussing the issue on the discussion forum on Apple's website. Among them are owners of the latest iPhone XS, as well as owners of other devices with iOS 12 installed. The problem occurs when the user connects his device to the charging port via a Lightning cable, or when he places his device on the appropriate wireless charging pad.

Most of the time, iPhones work as they should, and charging starts immediately. However, after updating to the latest version of iOS 12, some users noticed problems in the form of the absence of a charging symbol in the corner of the display, or the fact that the characteristic charging sound does not sound after connecting the phone to a power source. Some users managed to get charging working again by plugging in the device, waiting 10-15 seconds and then waking up the device - full unlocking was not necessary. Another user on the forum reports that if he did nothing with his phone while it was charging, it would stop charging, but when he picked up the device and started using it, it would reconnect with the charger.

The occurrence of the problem was also confirmed by Lewis Hilsenteger from UnboxTherapy, who performed a test on nine iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. The fact that this is apparently not a widely occurring problem is evidenced by the fact that with editors AppleInsider the problems did not occur with the iPhone XS Max, iPhone X or iPhone 8 Plus with iOS 12. All tested devices were connected to a USB-A or USB-C port via a Lightning cable, both to a computer and to a standard outlet. For devices that enabled this, a wireless charging pad was used for testing purposes. The problem only occurred with the iPhone 7 and the 12,9-inch iPad Pro of the first generation.

According to AppleInsider, the mentioned problem may be related to the USB restriction mode, which Apple introduced for increased protection of user privacy. However, it should not work if the iOS device is connected to the charger in a standard outlet. This is not the only issue related to the latest iOS, or the newest members of the Apple smartphone family. Belkin confirmed that its PowerHouse and Valet charging docks are not compatible with the iPhone XS and XS Max, but did not say why.
