Apple will release iOS 19 to the public tonight (00pm). Hundreds of millions of users will thus be able to update their devices. However, the new update will not be available to everyone. As good a job as Apple does with compatibility, some older devices will remain blocked from iOS 11. However, the fact that your device is compatible with the new update does not mean that you will be able to use all the news that is coming to us in the latest version of iOS.

First, let's take a look at the list of devices that will support iOS 11. The information comes directly from Apple, so the devices listed below should offer the update in the evening. Basically, these are devices that have a 64-bit processor. Support for 32-bit apps ends in iOS 11.

iPhone

  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8
  • 8 iPhone Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • 7 iPhone Plus
  • iPhone 6s
  • 6s iPhone Plus
  • iPhone 6
  • 6 iPhone Plus
  • iPhone SE
  • iPhone 5s

iPad

  • 12,9″ iPad Pro (both generations)
  • 10,5″ iPad Pro
  • 9,7″ iPad Pro
  • iPad Air (1st and 2nd generation)
  • iPad 5th generation
  • iPad Mini (2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation)

iPod

  • iPod Touch 6th generation

The fact that your device is on the list above means that you are eligible for the iOS 11 update, but nowhere does it say that the new version of iOS will run perfectly on you. This problem mainly affects those older devices in the compatibility list. I have personal experience with the first generation iPad Air, and it is definitely not very fast under the new iOS version (not to mention the absence of Split View). Therefore, if you have a "borderline" device (iPhone 5s, the oldest supported iPads), I recommend that you think carefully about switching to the new version. It can be very easy to become exasperated with the performance of your device.

The insufficient performance of all supported devices is also related to the truncated functions, which mainly affects owners of older iPads. iOS 11 will significantly expand the functionality of the user interface in iPads, especially in terms of multitasking. However, not everyone will be able to use it. Compatibility can be expected to be as follows:

Slide Over: support for the new iPad Pro, iPad 5th generation, iPad Air 2nd generation and iPad Mini 2nd generation (and later)

Split View: support for the new iPad Pro, iPad 5th generation, iPad Air 2nd generation and iPad Mini 4th generation
