The macOS Catalina operating system seemed to attract trouble. After freezing the installer itself, disappearing mail and problems with external graphics cards, a number of users are now reporting that the update has disabled their computer.

Na official support forums there are already several threads with this problem. They are quite comprehensive, but constantly recurring symptoms can be noticed.

I just "upgraded" to macOS Catalina. My laptop is a brick. All I see is a folder with a question mark, or nothing at all if I try CMD + R on boot.

Hi, this is happening to me too. 2014 MacBook Pro 13. Same problem. It looks like the update must have corrupted the motherboard firmware as it no longer recognizes the key combination at startup. I called Apple support. We didn't break up. The tech said it was a hardware issue, not an update. I do not get it. My computer worked fine until I updated to macOS Catalina.

I followed the instructions and updated the System Preferences as always. Now the computer only shows me a folder with a question mark that flashes for a few minutes. No key combination works. This is a serious issue that should be addressed by Apple.

I have the same problem. Genius kept trying to press a different combination of keys just like me and then said it was the motherboard. I don't get it at all, my iMac has been working fine since 2014.

It also happened to my 2014 MacBook Air and my two friends with 2015 MacBook Pros are having the exact same problems. No key combination works and 5 minutes after startup it just flashes a folder icon with a question mark. All indications are that there is a problem with the BIOS - EFI caused by the installation of macOS Catalina.

Reflashing EFI helped. Technicians in an unauthorized service did it

Some of the users reported the problem even before the beta version macos catalina, but many of the posts already refer to the sharp version. So the problem persists.

Many posts refer to possible EFI corruption. The Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) was designed by Intel to replace the Open Firmware used by older Macs with PowerPC processors.

I went to an authorized service center. The technician looked at the computer and said it was too old. So I pulled myself together and went to an unauthorized service center, but with normal people. They tested all the hardware and said it was working, but they couldn't wake up the motherboard. Finally flashed the entire EFI with a special tool and the computer suddenly works.

However, apparently the problems are not occurring on all computers. According to the posts, it can be seen that these are rather older models. Can't even trace specific model lines or brands. Only time will tell how serious the problem is.
