The number of likes is one of the main measures of the success of Instagram posts. But while it brings inner satisfaction to some users, it can cause depression to others. As absurd as it may seem, getting as many likes as possible on a photo is central to most of Instagram's billions of active users. Therefore, the social network has decided to make a drastic change and is starting to hide the number of likes. The novelty is spreading all over the world and, starting yesterday, it also arrived in the Czech Republic.

Instagram started testing hiding likes during the summer in Australia. Later, the function was extended to selected accounts in Brazil, Canada, Ireland, Italy and Japan. According to the social network itself, the reaction to the news was mostly positive, and that is why it has now spread all over the world. Some Czech and Slovak accounts already have hidden likes. So far, the change mainly affects profiles with thousands of followers, and less influential users will encounter it rather sporadically.

Instead of a specific number of likes, a message in the form of, for example, is now displayed under the posts "Jablíčkář.cz and others like it." If the post has more than a thousand (million) likes, the wording will be changed to "the apple man and thousands (millions) of others gave it a Like."

Likes are hidden on all photos across Instagram. However, for their own, the user can still view the number, in the detail of the post. As a result, the change will rather benefit Instagram itself, as it will partially mitigate the reach of influential accounts and their advertising posts, and potentially see higher interest in their advertising channels.
