If you look at the current range of Apple computers, you will find that Apple has really come a long way recently. It's been almost a year since the introduction of the very first computers with Apple Silicon chips, and currently the MacBook Air, 13″, 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro, Mac mini and 24″ iMac can boast of these chips. From the point of view of portable computers, they all already have Apple Silicon chips, and for non-portable computers, the next step is the iMac Pro and Mac Pro. The most anticipated at the moment is the iMac Pro and the 27″ iMac with Apple Silicon. Recently, various speculations about the new iMac Pro have appeared on the Internet - let's summarize them together in this article.

iMac Pro or replacement for 27″ iMac?

At the outset, it is necessary to mention that with the speculations that have appeared on the Internet recently, it is not entirely clear whether they are talking about the iMac Pro in all cases or the replacement for the 27″ iMac with an Intel processor, which Apple currently continues to offer alongside a 24″ iMac with an Apple Silicon chip. In any case, in this article we will assume that these are speculations aimed at the future iMac Pro, the sale of which was (temporarily?) discontinued a few months ago. Whether we will see a rebirth or replacement of the 27″ iMac is a mystery for now. What is certain, however, is that there will be a lot of changes available for the next iMac.

Performance and specifications

If you follow the events in the world of Apple, then two weeks ago you certainly did not miss the presentation of the new expected MacBook Pros, namely the 14″ and 16″ models. These brand new and redesigned MacBook Pros have come with changes on just about every front. In addition to design and connectivity, we saw the deployment of the very first professional Apple Silicon chips, labeled M1 Pro and M1 Max. It should be mentioned that we should expect these professional chips from Apple in the future iMac Pro.

Of course, the main chip is also seconded by the operating memory. It should be mentioned that the capacity of the unified memory is extremely important in combination with Apple Silicon chips and can fundamentally affect the overall performance of an Apple computer. In addition to the CPU, the GPU also uses this unified memory, which many users do not know. The basic model of the future iMac Pro should offer a single memory with a capacity of 16 GB, given the new MacBook Pros, users will be able to configure a variant with 32 GB and 64 GB anyway. The storage should then have a base of 512 GB, and several variants with a capacity of up to 8 TB will be available.

Display and design

Recently, Apple has deployed revolutionary displays with mini-LED technology for some of its new products. We first encountered this display technology on the 12.9″ iPad Pro (2021) and for a long time it was the only device that offered a mini-LED display. The qualities of this display cannot be denied, so Apple decided to introduce a mini-LED display in the already mentioned new MacBook Pros. According to available information, the new iMac Pro should also receive a mini-LED display. With that, it is clear that we will also get a ProMotion display. This technology enables an adaptive change in the refresh rate, from 10 Hz to 120 Hz.

In terms of design, Apple will go in exactly the same direction with the new iMac Pro as with all the other products it has introduced recently. We can therefore look forward to a more angular appearance. In a way, it can be argued that the new iMac Pro will be a combination of the 24″ iMac together with the Pro Display XDR in terms of appearance. The display size should be 27″ and it should be mentioned that the future iMac Pro will definitely offer black frames around the display. Thanks to this, it will be easy to recognize the classic versions of Apple computers from the professional ones, since next year it is expected that even the "regular" MacBook Air will offer white frames, following the example of the "regular" 24″ iMac.

Connectivity

The 24″ iMac offers two Thunderbolt 4 connectors, while the more expensive variants also offer two USB 3 Type C connectors. These connectors are extremely powerful and have huge potential, but unfortunately, they are still not the same, and “classic” connectors, at least for professionals, are missing. With the arrival of the already mentioned new MacBook Pros, we saw the return of proper connectivity - specifically, Apple came with three Thunderbolt 4 connectors, HDMI, an SDXC card reader, a headphone jack and a MagSafe power connector. The future iMac Pro should offer similar equipment, except of course the MagSafe charging connector. In addition to Thunderbolt 4, we can therefore look forward to an HDMI connector, an SDXC card reader and a headphone jack. Already in the basic configuration, the iMac Pro should additionally offer an Ethernet connector on the power "box". The power supply will then be solved by a similar magnetic connector as in the 24″ iMac.

Will we get Face ID?

Many users complained that Apple dared to introduce the new MacBook Pro with a cutout, but without putting Face ID in it. Personally, I don't think this step is bad at all, on the contrary, the cutout is something that has been defined by Apple for several years, which did the best it could. And if you expect that we will see Face ID at least on the desktop iMac Pro, then you are probably wrong. This was also indirectly confirmed by the vice president of product marketing for Mac and iPad, Tom Boger. He specifically stated that Touch ID is much more pleasant and easier to use on a computer, since your hands are already on the keyboard. All you have to do is swipe to the upper right corner with your right hand, place your finger on Touch ID and you're done.

Price and availability

According to available information from leaks, the price of the new iMac Pro should start at around $2. Given such a "low" amount, the question arises whether by chance this is really only the future 000″ iMac, and not the iMac Pro. But it wouldn't make any sense, since the 27″ and 24″ models should be “equal”, similar to the case of the 27″ and 14″ MacBook Pro – the difference should only be in size. Apple definitely has no plans to discount professional products, so I personally think that the price will simply be higher than the speculations. One of the leakers even states that this future iMac is being referred to internally at Apple as the iMac Pro.

iMac 27" and up

The new iMac Pro should see the light of day already in the first half of 2022. Alongside it, we should also expect the introduction of a redesigned MacBook Air and a replacement for the current 27″ iMac, which Apple continues to offer with Intel processors. Once these products are introduced by Apple, the promised transition to Apple Silicon will be practically complete, along with a complete redesign of the products. Thanks to this, it will be possible to distinguish new products from old ones simply at a glance - this is exactly what Apple wants. Only the top Mac Pro will remain with an Intel processor.
