It is a tradition that once you put something on the Internet, it will never disappear from it. Thanks to a project called the Internet Archive, this phrase is doubly true. The Internet Archive can not only restore versions of websites from long ago, but also provides its visitors with free access to older software or perhaps multimedia content. What can he do?

A valuable archive

The Internet Archive is a non-profit project whose creators started archiving Internet content in the second half of the 1990s. The founders of the internet archive themselves partially compared their activity to hiding old newspapers or magazines. Archiving itself was initially a matter for the creators, but nowadays anyone can participate in it, who Archive.org  create their own user account. The number of archived web pages is currently in the hundreds of billions, but you can also find hundreds of thousands of software programs and millions of videos, images, books, texts and audio recordings, including recordings of concert performances.

Webove stránky

On our sister site in the past we have reminisced about old versions of some Czech websites. We were able to remind our readers of their appearance precisely thanks to the Internet Archive project. If you want to see, for example, what your old profile looked like on Lidé.cz, or to recall the original form of the Atlas.cz portal, head to the page web.archive.org. In the text box at the top of it, enter the address of the website you want to explore. The key here is the time bar - on it, scroll to the year you want to view, then select the date you want from the calendar below the bar. Of course, it may happen that the version of the given page from some days has not been archived, or you may not be able to load all the content of the page. Finally, click on the selected date and time of the archive, and you can fully immerse yourself in the Internet past.

Books and more

You can also find electronic versions of some books and magazines in the Internet archive. If you want to search this kind of content, click on the three lines icon in the top left and select Books in the menu. You will be redirected to the Open Library platform, where you can borrow e-books after registering and logging in. You can also find books and magazines in the section Text Archive. Here you can browse various collections, use the menu on the left side of the page to filter the content and then read newspapers and magazines. If you have created an account, you can save selected content to your favorites list.

Music and software

If you click on Audio in the menu at the top left of the Archive.org page, you will be taken to the audio recording archive. Similar to books and magazines, you can use the menu on the left to filter content, browse collections, perform manual searches or visit discussion forums. You proceed similarly in the case of software - in the menu in the upper left corner, you choose Software, and if you want to play one of the games from the past online, you click on Internet Arcade. Thanks to emulators, you can play selected pieces directly in the Internet browser environment.
