From time to time, on the Jablíčkára website, we briefly recall the history of one of Apple's products. For the purposes of today's article, the HomePod smart speaker was chosen.

The beginnings

At a time when companies like Amazon or Google were coming up with their own smart speakers, it was quiet on the sidewalk from Apple for a while. At the same time, there was intense speculation that even in this case, users will not have to wait long for a smart speaker. Rumors of an upcoming "Siri Speaker" have been circulating the Internet, along with various concepts and assumptions about what Apple's smart speaker should look like and what it could do. In 2017, the world finally got it.

HomePod

The first generation HomePod was introduced at the WWDC conference. Apple equipped it with an Apple A8 processor, six microphones for capturing ambient sound, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. Of course, the HomePod offered support for the voice assistant Siri, support for the Wi-Fi 802.11 standard, and a number of other functions. For example, integration with the HomeKit platform for managing and controlling a smart home was a matter of course, and support for AirPlay 2 technology was also added over time. The first generation HomePod weighed 2,5 kilograms and its dimensions were 17,2 x 14,2 centimeters. The world had to wait until February of the following year for the arrival of the HomePod, and as usual, the initial reception of the first-generation HomePod was slightly tepid. Although reviewers praised the decent sound, criticism was received for practically zero support for third-party applications, the impossibility of direct calls from the HomePod, the absence of the ability to set multiple timers or the absence of support for recognizing multiple users. In addition, users also reported that the HomePod left marks on furniture.

home pod mini

HomePod mini was introduced on October 13, 2020. As the name suggests, it featured smaller dimensions and a more rounded shape. It was equipped with three speakers and four microphones and has a number of functions not only for communication within the household, but also for controlling a smart home. HomePod mini also offers the long-awaited multi-user support, a new Intercom function or perhaps the ability to personalize responses for different users. You can read more in our review.
