This week we return to our series on the history of various Apple products. This time the choice fell on Apple TV, so in today's article we will briefly summarize its beginnings, history and development.

The beginnings

Apple TV as we know it today is not the first manifestation of Apple's efforts to penetrate the waters of television broadcasting. In 1993, Apple introduced a device called Macintosh TV, but in this case it was essentially a computer equipped with a TV tuner. Unlike the current Apple TV, the Macintosh TV did not meet with much success. After 2005, the first speculations began to appear that Apple should come up with its own set-top box, some sources even talked directly about its own television.

First generation

The first generation Apple TV was presented at the Macworld trade show in San Francisco in January 2007, when Apple also began accepting pre-orders for this new product. Apple TV was officially launched in March 2007, equipped with an Apple Remote and a 40 GB hard drive. In May of the same year, an updated version with a 160 GB HDD was released. Apple TV gradually received a number of software improvements and new applications such as iTunes Remote for controlling Apple TV using an iPhone or iPod.

Second and third generation

On September 1, 2010, Apple introduced the second generation of its Apple TV. The dimensions of this device were slightly smaller compared to the first generation, and the Apple TV was launched in black. It was also equipped with 8GB of internal flash storage and offered 720p playback support via HDMI. Two years after the arrival of the second-generation Apple TV, users saw the third generation of this device. The third-generation Apple TV was equipped with a dual-core A5 processor and offered playback support in 1080p.

Fourth and fifth generation

Users had to wait until September 2015 for the fourth generation Apple TV. The fourth generation Apple TV boasted the new tvOS operating system, its own App Store and a number of other innovations, including the new Siri Remote with a touchscreen and voice control (in selected regions ). This model featured Apple's 64-bit A8 processor and also offered support for Dolby Digital Plus Audio. With the arrival of the fifth generation, users finally got the coveted 2017K Apple TV in September 4. It offered support for 2160p, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and was equipped with a faster and more powerful Apple A10X Fusion processor. After updating to tvOS 12, Apple TV 4K offered support for Dolby Atmos.

Sixth Generation - Apple TV 4K (2021)

The sixth generation Apple TV 4K was introduced at the Spring Keynote 2021. Apple also added a brand new remote control to it, which regained the name Apple Remote. The touchpad has been replaced by a control wheel, and Apple also sells this controller separately. Along with the release of Apple TV 4K (2021), the company discontinued the sale of the previous generation Apple TV.
