Apple Pencil has been improving the work of iPad owners since 2015, when its first generation was introduced together with the first iPad Pro. In today's article, we will briefly summarize its development, and we will also look at the differences between the two generations of Apple Pencil.

Who needs a stylus?

While a number of tablets and phablets from competing brands were equipped with styluses, Apple's iPad was operated only with a finger from the very beginning. Few people expected that Apple tablets would get a stylus sometime in the future - after all, Steve Jobs didn't exactly speak highly of styluses. But at the moment when Apple presented its Apple Pencil to the public, it was clear to everyone that it would not be a classic stylus in any case. The first generation Apple Pencil was introduced alongside the iPad Pro in September 2015.

It had a classic rounded shape, was charged using a Lightning connector, and offered pressure sensitivity along with angle detection. With the help of the Apple Pencil, it was possible to work even when the user leaned the side of the palm on the iPad display. On one charge, the first generation Apple Pencil lasted up to twelve hours of work, during a quick fifteen-second charge it managed to get enough energy for 30 minutes of work. The first-generation Apple Pencil was met with a fairly positive reception by users, with possible reservations directed, for example, to the address of charging or the shape, due to which the apple stylus could easily roll off the table.

Second generation

At the end of October 2018, the second generation of the Apple Pencil was introduced, along with the third generation of the iPad Pro. The new Apple Pencil was already edged – just like the new iPad Pro – and charged when placed on the edge of the iPad. In addition, the second-generation Apple Pencil had touch-sensitive areas, and thus also the ability to perform certain actions after tapping. The second-generation Apple Pencil also featured a more matte finish and a simpler look.
